GRAVESTONES IN CEMETERY AT ELMONT
In last month’s Long Island Life some account was given of the old gravestones in the Elmont Cemetery.
On the cemetery property further back from the road on the hill there stands a very old house. This house is at present occupied by John Van Nostrand. He is very old. Just how old he did not seem to know definitely. Mr. Van Nostrand told me that his great-great-grandfather, Aaron Van Nostrand, was buried in the old cemetery; that he had moved the east wing of the old house where it now stands and has added on the larger part of the house. The house is evidently very old for the hand wrought nails stand far out from the ancient weathered shingle siding, the wood of the old shingles having like an old man’s gums, long since withdrawn or been eroded from the neads of the nails.
Some of the names on the old headstones I copied were the following:
Abraham Van Nostrand, 55 years, 1785
Jas Burnett, 85, 1793
John Hendrickson, 62, 1792
Anthony Remsen, 52, 1794
Daniel H. Burtis, 1813
Christian Snedecor, 1792
John Duryea, 77 years, 1815
