Sophia AKERS (1795-1874)

Sophia AKERS,1 daughter of Thomas AKERS (1758?-1824) and Ann HINCHLEY (1757-bef1831), was born on 15 May 1795 at Mulgrave Place in Hawkesbury, NSW.2 She was baptised on 13 June 1795 in Sydney Cove, NSW.3,4 She resided at Appin Road in Campbelltown, NSW. In her old age she lived with her daughter Ann Rixon at Campbeltown.5 She married Jeremiah SMITH on 23 September 1811 at St John Anglican Church in Parramatta, NSW when she was 16. Witnesses to the marriage were John WALBY & Ann ACRES.6 She died on 17 July 1874 in Campbelltown (aged 79). The cause was asthma.7 She was buried in St Peter's Anglian Church in Campbelltown.8

 

Sophia's name, like a lot of other records in the early days, was spelt incorrectly in the Church of England Baptismal records where it is shown as Aikens. She was baptized in St. Phillip's, Church of England in Sydney.

Sophia was only 16 years old when she married Jeremiah Smith,a convict from the third fleet, he was 17 years her senior.

In the 1828 census Sophia was living at Airds, with Jeremiah and their family she was 33 years old.

In her old age Sophia lived with her daughter Ann Rixon on the Appin Rd, Campbelltown.9
