Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Mount Pleasant Methodist Church The Mount Pleasant Methodist Church stood on the north-west corner of lot 8 con 9 of Nichol Township. This property was taken by Henry Metcalf in 1833, and it was he who donated the site for the church building. Salem Methodist Church The Salem Methodist Church stood beside the old Salem school with a line of maple trees forming a boundary between the two lots. Cumnock Methodist Church The Cumnock Methodist Church stood on the southeast corner of Lot 1 Con 15 of Nichol Township and was built in the year 1877, closed in 1924. FLEWELLING Abraham Jewell was bon in 1789 in New Brunswick Welsh has the distinction of being the very first settled to arrive in Lower nIchol from his havingstaked out a claim on lot 9 con 8 in 1827 and afterwards adding several hundred acres to his original holding. He was the first person to plant an orchard, and opened the first tavern, a short distance south of the present village of Ennotville. He also had a cooper shop and the first schoolhouse in the area was located on his property, on the same site as the present position of Mt. METCALF Henry was born in 1796 at Barnard Castle in Yorkshire, England and in 1821 married Rebecca Benson. They arrived in America late in the year 1830 and settled near Buffalo New York. In 1833 Henry moved the family north to Cumnock Nichol Twp. During the ocean voyage from England, Henry Metcalf suffered violently for seasickness and never fully recoved from the ordeal, which culminated in his death at the age of 48 in 1844. John spent almost 80 years of his life on the Mt. Pleasant farm, when it was sold in 1912, and was in his 98th year when he passed to his eternal rest in 1921

OWENS Samuel was born in Northern Ireland and arrived prior to 1835 married Elizabeth Astleford living lot 7 con 10 Nichol Twp. A legend still persists that Samuel Owens chose his final resting place on his own farm, and instructed his sons to dig his grave in the orchard. Regardless of the authenticity of this tale, there is positive evidence of the exact spot upon which his remains were interred. The orchard has long since vanished, but a cairn erected in his memory by his wife, Elizabeth still stands adjacent to the eastern boundary of the farm. The spot is indicated by a weathered grey marker, which bears the inscription that Samuel Owens died April 1, 1855.
