Welcome to the Merideth/ Meredith family DNA Project.. Our objective is to use scientific testing of the Male Y- DNA of as many Meredith males as possible to identify the various Meredith lines and to verify the connection of today's Meredith families to their genealogical lines. OVERVIEW

The Y DNA is carried only by males. It is passed unchanged, except for widely spaced mutations, from father to son to grandson to great grandson etc. Each male passes the y DNA to all his male children. By testing multiple male candidates in the Meredith lines and comparing the results, it is possible to determine those who share a grandfather, great grandfather, or even a 25 great grandfather. Unfortunately the test does not as accurately identify how far in the past the common male ancestor occurred. However, an estimate can be developed based on the number of mutations, or lack thereof, that have occurred. The number of markers tested and compared is a factor in this estimate. A match of 37 out of 37 markers would indicate much more recent relationship than would a match of 10 out of 12. In either case, a calculation is performed and an estimate of how many generations in the past the most recent common ancestor lived is made.

ELIGIBILITY

Participants should be male with the last name Meredith or on of it�s variant spellings. Others could include males with a suspected Meredith lineage due to adoptions, name changes etc. Female researchers may participate by recruiting a father, brother male cousin or other male Meredith relative to submit a test.

COST

Familytree DNA recommends that we begin with a basic 12 marker test. If a match is found with another the 12 marker test can be refined to 25 maker or 37 marker without the necessity of collecting another sample. Familytree offer the Project members the following discounted prices.
