The
spelling of the name MERIDETH/ MEREDITH/ MERIDITH/ MERYDITH and it's many other
variations have been a concern for some.
I spell my name MERIDETH, but even within our family there is
disagreement. My father's younger
brother & sisters spell the name MEREDITH and my Great Grandfather changed
from MERIDETH to MEREDITH in his old age.
For the sake of uniformity and because this database is computerized and
can be searched, all entries are spelled MEREDITH. Where my notes included variations in spelling, I included the
variant these in the details. It is my
opinion that spelling variations prove nothing.
The
data file was created as a table using Microsoft Word 97. It is arranged chronologically first by year
then by month and then by record type.
This order allows records from the same time frame to be compared and
connections recognized; however, if a computerized copy of the table is
available, the data may be rearranged alphabetically or numerically using any
column. For example, you may prefer to
have the data arranged first by record type then by date thus having all
records of the same type grouped together.
An
every name index is included at the back of the book or specific names may be
searched using the find feature of your word processing program.
Throughout: I have added some notes & conclusions
in the details section of the data. To
help identify all such notes & conclusions, they are enclosed in brackets [ ].
Notes enclosed in parenthesis (
) are found in original documents.
Both may be highlighted if they provide significant information.
The
tax records of Kent County Delaware are an invaluable resource and are the
backbone of this document. The earliest
list found in the state archives is 1726.
Earlier lists could be very important if they are ever locate. I have included tax lists from 1726 thru
1870. Later lists exist but I did not
include them. Not all years are
available and some are fragmented or unreadable. The tax records for Sussex and New Castle Counties are more
fragmented, harder to read and less complete than Kent County. I have included those I have, but not all
have been abstracted. A major source for Kent Co. Tax lists was abstracts provide to me by Charles D. Donovan of Dover, Delaware. Additional tax lists were also abstracted by my mother, Lois MERIDETH.
The
tax assessor not only listed all taxpayers and the amount of their valuation,
but frequently made notes to help identify the individuals and occasionally
listed their property. A note may
identify the person's father, occupation, marital status, relatives, where they
lived, where they moved to or from, when they died, etc. The note, "of Taylor", next to John MEREDITH
in 1826 helped me identify John as a son of my ggggrandfather, Taylor MEREDITH.
Other
means of identifying family groups can be found in the placement on the
list. For example: in the lists of 1752
Robert, Joshua and John are found together on the list and in another location
Hugh, Nehamiah, Job & Hugh jr. are found.
Since Hugh & Robert were the first on the lists appearing on the
first surviving list in 1726 with the others being added years later, it can be
assumed that Robert had sons Joshua and John and that Hugh had sons Nehamiah,
Job and Hugh jr. Between 1726 and 1790
I have grouped the people together & separated by a line space to indicate
groups as they appeared on the lists.
Later lists were not spaced when abstracted.
A
man appears to have been assessed upon attaining adulthood. The tax includes a pole tax, so I assume
their age to be 21 when they first appear in the tax records. Their approximate date of birth can then be
estimated. Of course, here can be other
reasons for adding a person to the list other than age, but it is a clue. Women only appear when they are
widowed. Usually for only a year,
[Presumably to pay the partial years tax owed by their husband before he died]
but longer if they inherited real property from their husbands.
Marital
status can also be deduced from the tax list in some years. The tax assessor frequently added a note
that said single next to the name. At
other times they simply put a "s" next to the name. In the mid 1700s there seemed to be a standard amount of 12 L for
single men and 8 L for married men so even if a note was not made, it is still
possible to make a reasonable determination of marital status. The 1762 list has a great example when
Wheeler MEREDITH's assessment of 12L was scratched out & changed to
8L. He got married. On the same list Job MEREDITH is lined
out. He died. Of course, sometimes these amounts were changed for other reasons
such as the acquisition of property, but these can usually be recognized.
Then
earliest available records in Delaware are the land records, they date from the
1600's. A through research of these
records may provide the most accurate early history of the MERIDETH family.
Most of the records included in this database are from the Kent Co.
Recorder's office. Some information is also included from the Delaware Archives
records called "Archive Deeds". The
first MERIDETH record I have found is from 1722 and the last I included is from
1872 though later records exist. I have examined all those MEREDITH records
in the index thru 1872, butI abstracted only those with genealogical
information. Those not abstracted are
shown as Index in the detail column.
I
feel that further research into land records will provide additional valuable
genealogical information. Land records
of related families such as Davis, Luff, Whitaker, etc. may turn up additional
MERIDETH family data.
A
few land records from Maryland are included in this database. Further research of the land records of
Maryland may also yield additional information. Since the Maryland and Delaware border was disputed before the
Mason Dixon survey in 1763, some early land records of Delaware were recorded in Maryland and vise
versa. Pennsylvania and New York also
had early claims to Delaware land and their records also require further
research.
The
probate records in the Delaware Archives are arranged alphabetically and they
were recently microfilmed. I have
researched all MEREDITH records in these files, however; I did not abstract
information from them all. I concentrated
instead on those people who might tie to the my own ancestors. To supplement these abstracts, the printed
books "Calendar of Kent Co., Delaware Probate Records 1680 - 1800" and
"Calendar of Delaware Wills - New Castle County" were used. Consequently, the records from before 1767
are from original records and all the records before 1800 are reasonably
complete, the 1800 - 1863 records contain the information contained in wills
listing heirs. Most other probate
records 1800 - 1863 and all those records after 1863 are not included. On my
next trip to Delaware I intend to do a complete abstract of these records.
All
guardian account records in the Delaware Archives filed under the name Meredith
were abstracted and included in this database.
All
orphans court records at the Delaware Archive, listed under the name MEREDITH,
in the index are included in the database.
The
Delaware census records are from the National Archives microfilmed records. Using these records instead of available
printed records has provided some additional information especially in the
1800census where the census taker made notes in the margin identifying where
the family lived. The 1790 Delaware
census is not included as it was destroyed by fire. This census has been reconstructed using available tax lists,
which are already included in the database.
Some census information from other states is also included for families connected to Delaware.
Abstracts
are from original records at the Delaware archives.
These
records are chronological and not indexed.
I included abstracts of all records I could find involving the surname
MERIDETH though 1850.
Mostly
these are from the marriage index cards at the Delaware Archive. Many of the original records were also
checked for additional information.
Although tombstone & cemetery records may not be
primary source, I included the ones I have collected in this database. Most of the tombstone records are from "Kent
County Delaware Cemetery Records" by DILL and are indicated as such in the
database.
Obituaries
are likewise not primary source information, but may provide valuable clues.
The
military records are from the National archives' "Compiled Service Records
of Revolutionary War Soldiers" and "Revolutionary War Pension Files".
