During the years of 1883 and 1884, Herman's widow and his four adult children and their families immigrated to America. After a brief stay in Chicago, they eventually came to Cuming Township of Dodge County, Nebraska. This was part of an area of Dodge County known as New Oldenburg or Little Oldenburg because so many Germans from Oldenburg settled there. Little is known about specific details of their life in Dodge County, other than they farmed and were active members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church (northwest of Hooper). We can assume the Menkens family lived a relatively typical 1880's Nebraska life, enduring many hardships yet having a strong family center. By 1900, Herman's widow had died and each of the four families had moved on to Knox County. Herman's second child, Heinrich, eventually settled in Potter County, South Dakota.

The 1885 Nebraska State Census of Cuming Township, Dodge County shows Margarete's daughter, Anna Menkens, living with Margarete's brother Heinrich and his wife. Anna used the name Menkens rather than her mother's husband's name of Osterloh. We can only speculate as to the reason. Margaretha and Johann moved to Knox County after 1889.

Heinrich's son's obituary indicates the family stayed a short time in Chicago before coming to Nebraska. Their first Nebraska home was in Dodge County, with Heinrich, Gesine, and their two older children counted in the 1885 Nebraska State Census. They moved to Knox County between 1886 and 1900. In 1900, Heinrich purchased 160 acres of land in Harrison Township, Knox County, for $1775. He sold this land to his sister Gesine Margarethe and her husband Johann Dietrich in 1902 and moved to Potter County, South Dakota in 1908, purchasing a farm about 6 miles south of Lebanon.

Christian Hinrich, wife Friederika, and children Minnie and Charles first lived in Chicago, where daughter Sophie was born. They were living in Dodge County, Nebraska by 1885, where daughter Bertha was born, and moved to Knox County by 1890. After Friederika died, Christian lived for 10 years with his oldest daughter, Minnie, and spent the last year of his life in Lincoln with his daughter Kate. The obituary carried in the Bloomfield Monitor refers to Christian as Grampa Menkens and describes him as a kind straightforward man and father, loved and held in the highest esteen by all who knew him.

Gesine and Johann Dietrich first lived in Chicago, losing two young daughters. They moved to Dodge County, Nebraska in time to be counted in the 1885 Nebraska State Census. Their children Lena, Lizzie, Herman, and Martha were born in Dodge County. The two youngest children, John Henry and Carl, may have been born in Dodge County or in Knox County. The family was in Knox County in time to be counted in the 1900 Federal Census. In 1902, Gesine and Johann Dietrich purchased 160 acres in Harrison Township from Gesine's brother Heinrich.

This esteemed gentleman is referred to as the other Hermann Menkens because at one time my research had led me to believe there was only one Hermann -- that this man had married Gesche Kroemer, had children, then married Catharina Schroeder (without divorcing Ms. Kroemer) and had five more children. The German genealogist has since set me straight and proven there were indeed two Hermanns.
In the interest of keeping generation numbers consistent (and in the interest of keeping my sanity!) this list begins with generation (5) even though the previous four generation are unknown at this time.

Catharina Schroeder and Gesche Margarete Kroemer (wife of the Hermann Menkens of the first Menkens family detailed in this link) shared a common ancestor going back about nine generations. To date, this is the only connection found between the two Menkens families. However, we may conclude it is quite possible these families knew each other in Germany since they generally came from the same area of Oldenburg (Ganderkesee), settled in the same township in Nebraska, and were active in the same church. In addition, one of this Hermann's sons later moved to Knox County and farmed near the sons of the first Hermann.
Hermann and Catharina and their children immigrated some time between 1875 and 1879 (4 to 8 years before the immigration of the other Menkens families detailed in this link). They settled in Dodge County in the New Oldenburg area and were active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Hooper.

Herman's son John Henry indicated on his naturalization papers that he immigrated 11/1/1875 -- it is not known if he was alone or with the family. Since John Henry would have been only 17 years of age in 1875, it would be a logical conclusion that he was with the family.
Herman must have met with reasonable success in his farming endeavors, for at the time of his death in 1896 he left an estate of over $3,000 in cash and accounts as well as land valued at $700 (given typical land prices at the time, probably 80 acres). After his wife died, Herman made his home in Cuming County with their daughter Catharina and her husband.

It is not known whether John Henry came to America alone or with his parents and siblings. Because he was only 17 in 1875, we may assume he was with his family. J.H. was in Knox County in 1879, then moved to Dodge County, then Cuming County. After marrying in 1890, he farmed in Madison County for eight years. He returned to Knox County for a dozen or more years before taking his final residence in Holt County near Inman. J.H. was naturalized in Knox Co. 4/26/1906

Catharina immigrated with her parents and siblings between 1875 and 1879, possibly 11/1/1875 with her brother John Henry. She lived in Dodge and Cuming County with her parents until her marriage in 1884. After her husband died, Catharina married Henry Bleckwehl (b. about 1867; d. 11/15/1944, Anaheim, California) of Stanton County on 10/29/1913 in Cuming County. There were no children from her second marriage.
Thirteen or fourteen children:
The confusion as to the number of children results from cemetery records at West Point. One headstone reads Infant Daughters born and died the same day (12/31/1884). Another headstone reads Infant Son, died 1885. Other family sources indicate the Infant Daughters were twins, but list as one daughter and one son and do not record the separate birth of one son in 1885.
