This indenture made the third day of March 1778 Between James Hickman of County of Culpeper of one part and Susanna Browning Daughter of the said James Hickman of the same county of other part Witnesseth that said James Hickman for love he hath for his said Daughter doth give unto the said Susanna Browning Wife of James Browning all that land whereon James Browning now liveth in the County aforesaid containing ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY EIGHT of land . . . on the side of a Mountain thence South to a red oak corner to Thomas McClannahan . . . then North in David Hickman's line . . .thence North to Thorntons . . . part of a tract of land formerly granted to Robert Cave which said land the said James Hickman doth by these presents grant unto Susanna Browning . . . Signed: James Hickman. Wit: Robt. Eastham Jr., Jason Isbell, Edwin Hickman, Geo Calvert Junr., P. Eastham, George Eastham. Recorded at Court for Culpeper County, 17th Aug 1778.

Ibid., Vol. 13, (1791-1792), p. 112, This indenture made the Seventh day of November one thousand seven hundred and Seventy eight Between Edmund Browning, Attorney in fact for John Browning (Note: James Browning's uncle), of the Province of North Carolina, of one part and James Browning Junr of County of Culpeper & Colony of Virginia of other part; Whereas Sd. John Browning did on the first day of May 1754, obtain from the Lord Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia; a Deed for TWO HUNDRED SEVEN ACRES of land in sd. County. bounded, Begining at a Hickory & two chesnut Oasks in a line of Capt. Edwin Hickman on the top of said Hickmans Mountain and running thence So. 55 West 60 pol to a Chesnut. . thence So. 31 et. 94 pole to chesnut in a line of Joseph Norman, thence with Normans line No. 25 d. et. 236 poles . . a corner to said Norman . . . Whereas Sd John Browning did on the (blank) make a full & sufficient Power of Attorney to Sd Edmund Browning . . enabling him to sell & convey . . . said treact of land & premises; Now this indenture witnesseth that Edmund Browning in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by James Browning, . . . his heirs the 207 acres of land afsd . . Signed: the day a year aforesaid, in the presence of John Minor, John Norman, Courtney Norman, Edmund (his mark X) Browning, . . . partly proved by the oaths of John Norman & Courtney Norman March 1779; and at a Court held for said County the 17 day of Sep 1792, this said indunture was fully proved by the Oath of John Minor another witness thereto . . .

Ibid., Vol.16:76, (1794-1795), This indenture made 10 Mar 1795, between James Browning and Jenny his wife of County of Culpeper of one part and Martha Tannahill of County of Frederick of other; Witnesseth that James Browning and Jenny his wife in consideration of the sum of One hundred twenty pounds to them paid, do sell unto Martha Tannahill, a certain parcel of land lying within the County of Culpeper and conveyed by Deed of Gift from James Hickman to SUSANNAH BROWNING, wife of said JAMES BROWNING (now deceased) recorded in the County Court of Culpeper - containing ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY EIGHT ACRES - boarders, Thomas McClanaham, David Hickman's line, Thornton's line - together with all houses enclosures etc. Signed: James Browning - Jenny Browning - Wit: Henry Ward, William Brooke, Philip Eastham, John Tutt, Jr, Lewis Moore Justices of Culpeper County. Henry Ward, Wm Brooke interrogated Jenny Browning April 1795. Proved in court 15 Jun 1795.

Ibid., Vol.17:70-71, (1795-1796), This indenture made the 18 Oct 1795; Between James Browning of Fayette County in the State of KENTUCKY of one part and Michael Tomlin of Frederick County in the State of Virginia of other part; Witnesseth that James Browning in consideation of the sum of One hundred and twenty five pounds to James Browning - doth bargain and sell unto Michael Tomlin a parcel of land lying in County of Culpeper containing TWO HUNDRED SIX ACRES - boarders- Brook's line, Joseph Brackney, - together with all houses etc. Signed by Francis Browning, Attorney in fact for James Browning, in presence of Geo Wheeler, Richard Larrance, John Browning, Benjamin Heaton, 11 Oct 1795 - proved at Court 18 Apr 1796 by oath of Richard Larrance, John Browning and Benjamin Heaton. (Note: this would appear to be the same land purchased by James Browning from his uncle John Browing, 7 Nov 1778.)

TAXATION: Fayette County, Ketucky Tax Record, 1787-1804, FHL #0007957. James Browning and Benjamin Duncan appear on this record in 1795 through 1801 ( I did not continue after 1804.) Francis Browning arrives in 1796 as does James Duncan and William Duncan. John, Wm. and Benj. Duncan in 1801.
