     BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Exact Source not noted, photo copy from the files of Meledie Duncan Gregory: Abel Johnston was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1812. Married Margaret Gillespie in 1833. They have seven sons, all men grown, and now residing in other States, except one. Mr. Johnston first came to Van Wert County in 1836, and entered his land, but did not settle on it till 1838. The Johnston family all came from Harrison County; the family consisted of father, mother, three brothers, and four sisters. There are now living in the county Mrs. Wagers and Abel Johnston, of Willshire Towship, and Davis Johnston of Van Wert. They were a family of more than ordinary intelligence, and have held prominent offices in the county. Abel Johnston, the subject of this sketch, was Associate Judge of the county in the year 1847, and has been Justice of the Peace a number of years. Mr. J. had three sons in the late rebellion, who served their full time of enlistment, and were honorabley discharged. Mr. J. says the first school house built in the township, outside of Willshire Village, was on section 7, in the year 1838, and taught by Davis Johnston, also that the first election in the township was in the fall of 1837.

OBITUARY: The Van Wert American; 1 Aug 1855; 'Died on Saturday night last, at the residence of Abel Johnson, Esq., Joseph Johnson, aged about seventy-seven years. The deceased was a native of Virginia, and at an early day moved from there to Harrison county in this state; and from there he moved to this county, where he has resided for the last twenty years. The deceased was an industrious man and a good citizen, and was highly esteemed by his neighbors, and all who knew him. He has left a large connexion (sic) of friends to mourn his loss.

Jones' grandfather, Benjamin Jones, was born January 17, 1837, in Richland County, Ohio, and died January 27, 1903, in Van Wert County. . . Benjamin's wife, Mary nee Dailey, was born in Adams County November 12, 1846, and died in Van Wert County on March 2, 1946. Her parents were James T. and Mary (Johnson) Dailey. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Davis) Johnson. Joseph was born May 23, 1776, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died July 29, 1855, in Van Wert County. He was the son of Able and Anna Alexander Johnson. Abel was born in England in 1743 and died in Virginia in 1824. Abel served as a private in the 5th Battalion, Washington County, militia in the War of the Revolution. Mary Davis Johnson was born January 3, 1783, in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died January 21, 1851 in Van Wert County. . . .
