DEATH: Larue County,Kentucky vital records; FHL #209608.
BIRTH: National Archives Trust Fund Board, Washington, DC - Civil War Pension file for children of Napoleon McDowell - "Emmett Richard McDowell (b) Sep 2, 1883."

OBIT/CONTRIBUTOR: Linda L Salsman, email address llms3@juno.com (current in Feb 2003), Larue County Herald, Thursday, January 30, 1919. Death has entered another home in our community and claimed Mr. Emmett Richard McDowell on January 24, 1919 about 4:30 p.m. Mr. McDowell was born September 2, 1883 which made him more than 35 years of age. He was stricken on Saturday with that awful malady, the influenza, which resulted in his death. His sufferings were intense. Nothing human hands or medical skill could do would give him any ease. Emmett was married to Miss Gladys Harbin on December 8, 1917. Their two short years of married life was full of happiness for they were so deeply devoted to each other. Why God deprived them of their early happiness together is beyond our knowing, but God in his wisdom does all things for the best. Emmett has only been taken from this world of sorrow and trouble to the great beyond to await the resurrection. It is hard for us to see why so many have fallen victims to this dreadful disease. Emmett has many friends who will miss his daily companionship. He was of a joyful nature, always had a pleasant word and a smile for everyone. He was a fine mechanic and for some time has been employed in the garage here. He will be greatly missed in the town and community for he was alwasy ready and willing to lend a helping hand. The devoted wife is heart borken, for there is a vacant chair in her home and a loving voice stilled that was very dear. Besides his wife, Emmett leaves to mourn his loss 5 sister; Mrs. John Alfrey of Morinca, Michigan, Mrs (paper torn) Sutherland, Mrs. Jeff Thomas and Misses Sherley and Sudie McDowell of this place. He was laid to (bottom of the page missing.)
