TAXATION: The tithable lists of Lunenburg County provide the names of the male residents who are sixteen years of age and older, overseers or bound servants, and the names of the slaves. The name of the head of household was generally listed first with other tithables listed below, but that does not always seem to be the case. In many instances, the same names are listed in a different order each year. If a person returned his list of tithes of a certain number made up of his own name, the names of other persons of his name, and certain slaves, there is a reasonable presumption that the tithables bearing his name may be his children, who were that year between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one years of age. Landon C. Bell abstracted the tithable records of Lunenburg County in his book, Sunlight on the Southside, he listed only the names of the white tithables, leaving out the names of the non-whites but counting them in the total number of tithables for each household. Unfortunately, this important book does not embrace the lists available for the period, 1753-1763.
