OBIT: Contributor of this obituary, Linda L Salsman, llms3@juno.com (current in Feb 2003). Larue County Herald, Thursday, February 6, 1919. Influenza claimed another one of the family of Mrs. James McDowell last Saturday. Bruce McDowell died last Saturday at 9 p.m. and was buried at Buffalo the following day. He was a member of South Fork Church and a noble fine young man who will be greatly missed by the church and by his mother and brothers and sisters. This family have the sympathy of the community having lost 4 of the immediate family recently of the same dreaded disease.

Lydia Gibson, 88 of Galva, Illinois, died Saturday, September 25, 1982, at St. Mary's Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. She had been hospitalized since September 15. She was a native of Larue County and was married to Everett Gibson who preceded her in death in 1964. She was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church. Gibson is survived by a son, Paul T., of Galva, Illinois; 4 daughters, Helen Puckett of Hodgenville, Mary Underwood of LaGrange, Anna Earl Gibson and Louise Howell, both of Galva; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Margaret Wilson of Princeton, Illinois, and Lois Rice of Buffalo; 2 brothers, Joseph E. and David W. McDowell, both of Louisville, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by 4 brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 28, in Johnson-Gill-Schuster Chapel in Galva with the Rev. Kenneth Starns of Galva Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Wyanet. Memorials were direct to the Heart Fund.

Tom McDowell, age 63 years, who had operated a service station at Buffalo for the past 20 years, died early Friday at his home in Buffalo, after a long illness. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Buffalo Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances McDowell; a son, Rodney, at home; a step-son, Arthur Lewis, Lousiville; his mother, Mrs. Bettie McDowell, of Buffalo; 2 brothers, Earnest and Wendell McDowell, both of Lousiville, and 3 sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Gibson and Mrs. Margaret Wilson of Illinois and Mrs. Lois Rice, of Buffalo.

He was a native of Larue County, a retired stock clerk for American-Standard and a member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church. Surviviors include his wife the former Viola Rouck; a daughter, Juanita Gillock; a brother, Earnest McDowell of Valparaiso, Indiana; a sister, Lois Rice of Buffalo; 2 granchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Arch L. Heady Funeral Home with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park.
