John Curtis Ellis was born December 25, 1866 near Caledonia, Washington County, Missouri, the son of Henry and Delphia (Morgan) Ellis. His mother died while he was still a baby. He was raised by his father and older sisters.

On 4 September 1888 in Reynolds County, Missouri, he was married to Eliza Jane Camden, the daughter of Benjamin B. and Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth (Tubbs) Camden. She was born May 14, 1869 in Reynolds County, Missouri. They resided in Reynolds County, Missouri, in and around Piedmont, Wayne County Missouri, St. Louis, Missouri, and Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri.

John Ellis died 15 March 1940 at St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried in an unmarked grave at the Belknap Cemetery, St. Francois County, Missouri. He is buried between his two sisters, Molly (Ellis) Kitchel and Cynthia (Ellis) Kitchel. Eliza Jane (Camden) Ellis died 16 November 1950 at Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri. She is buried at the Warrenton City Cemetery, Warren County, Missouri.

They were the parents of five children:

(1) Laura Belle Ellis   was born 17 Nov 1888 in Reynolds County, Missouri. She married George Bearden.

(2) William Henry Ellis  was born 14 June 1891 in Reynolds County, Missouri. He married Mamie Irene Allison on Christmas Day 1914.

(3) Arvel Arthur Ellis was born 28 March 1896 at Piedmont, Wayne County, Missouri. He married Glenna Miller and Mrs. Riffie Harris.

(4) John Cecil Ellis was born August 1899 at Piedmont, Wayne County, Missouri. He married Carrie Pyles.

(5) Walter Emil Ellis was born 10 September 1910 at Piedmont, Wayne County, Missouri. He married Mary Aubuchon.
