The Red Lion

(The Lion)

The Street, Ardleigh

See pictures in the Photo Gallery

The Red Lion is situated in The Street, Ardleigh. It was built in the 14th century and sits opposite the church. Parish meetings were held here frequently. In 1796 George Biggs (b.1769) was innkeeper living with his wife Ann (b.1769) and sons James (b.1791) and Benjamin (b.1794). Servants: Elizabeth Gunn (b.1779); James Alliston (b.1778) and William Tricker (b.1766).  In the 1843 Tithe map the Lion or Red Lion is not present but there is the Sun Inn listed which is in the same area. Perhaps the name was entered incorrectly? or it changed it's name briefly?  The owner of the Sun Inn was John Cobbald and occupier was Mary Vince. In 1848 Mary Vince occupier and the Lion  was operating as a Post Office with letters despatched every evening and received every morning, via mail cart.
