An Alehouse and Inn, in The Street, Ardleigh between 1769-1918 and was closed in 1919 was the licence was refused. It was one of the oldest house in the centre of the village and dates back to the 14th century. Parish meetings were held here. Twice yearly the parish dinner was held here (and occasionally at one of the other inns). One was held at Easter. The overseers, constables, churchwardens and others sat down to a meal. They drank Beer, Gin Rum, brandy, water, wine and other spirit. In 1796 Jonathan Bull (b.1763) was innkeeper living with his wife Mary (b.1764), their children were Jonathan (b.1789), George (b. 1793), Mary (b.1794), Ann (b.1795) and servant (b.1775). In 1843 the Land owner was Daniel Howard and occupied by Thomas Sarjeant. Today it is called 'The Ancient House' and now a brasserie. On the market for sale.
