See pictures in the Photo Gallery
The Fox and Dogs as it was first known was an inn and alehouse built before 1769 and stands in Fox Street, Ardleigh (part of the Harwich Road) . In 1796 the Fox and Dogs was occupied by a Philip Porter (born 1755) who was living with his fve children: Philip (b.1773), John (b.1780), Hannah (b.1782, Elizabeth (b.1786) and Mary Ann (b.1788). Lodging with them was Isaac Ladbroke (b.1756) who was a horse dealer and his wife (Susan (b.1757 and children; Susan (b.1780), Martha (b.1782) and Mary (b.1784). According to Erith's research the original building was demolished in 1900. Perhaps the new building was built by John Downes, his trade was an innkeeper and also being a builder. The name Fox and Hounds remained to the 1990s when it was renamed 'The Welshwood'.
