MAPLE HILL - Lester Joseph “Shorty” Raine, 70, Maple Hill, died Friday in a Topeka hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 29. He had been admitted to the same hospital June 9, 1970, and released. He had cancer.

He was born Sept. 11, 1900 near Belvue and spent most of his life in the Maple Hill community. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 101 at Kansas City, MO. He was a past commander and current adjutant of Post No. 130 of the American Legion at Maple Hill.

He was married to May [Mary] M. Oliver Aug. 6, 1942, at Alma. She died Dec. 19, 1968.

Survivors include a brother, Francis C. Raine, 2521 Buchanan; and a sister, Mrs. Jessie Arnold, Eskridge.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church. Post No. 130 of the American Legion will conduct graveside services at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Maple Hill Community Congregational Church Memorial Fund in Topeka. Austin Funeral Home in Eskridge is in charge of arrangements.
