Benjamin Rollins enlisted on 29 September 1814, in New Hampshire, as a musician in Captain Edward Fuller's Company, New Hampshire Militia.133
Known children of Catherine3 Ward and Benjamin Rollins were as follows:
-
101. i. Samuel Ward4 Rollins was born 3 March 1835 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.134 He died 14 January 1865 cause of death: diseases contracted in Rebel Prisons of Georgia, age 29 years in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.135 He was buried in Danville Green Cemetery in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.136
Samuel Ward Rollins enlisted on 21 September 1861, in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., Vermont, as a private in Company G, 4th Vermont Infantry, for a period of 3 years.137
On 21 September 1861, Samuel Ward Rollins enlisted as a private in the newly formed 4th Vermont Infantry, the first of his family to enter the Union ranks.138 The Fourth was part of the familus "Vermont Brigade." This brigade fought throughout the Civil War, and was commended for valor time and time again. Ward took part in some of the bloodiest fighting of the Civil War: Antietam in September 1862; Chancellorsville in May 1863, where he was wounded; and Gettysburg in July of the same year.139 In November 1863, Ward was promoted to the rank of corporal in Company G.
138 Was promoted.138 Spent 6 months in five different rebel prisons, including Andersonville.140 Was taken prisoner of war. His company, part of the famous "Old Vermont Brigade," was engaged in the assault, seige, and capture of Petersburg from 16 June 1864 to 3 April 1865.141
Ward's brother-in-law, Henry Peck, joined the same regiment in January 1864,142 and the two proceeded to the battle that has been called Vermont's "Bloodiest Day," the Battle of the Wilderness. The Fourth lost 250 men on the first day of that battle.143 Henry Peck was one of these casualties, wounded in his first battle experience. Ward came through unscathed. Less than three months before his term of service expired, however, on 23 June 1864 at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, Ward was taken prisoner.138 125 men from the 4th Vermont were captured that day and marched to Andersonville Prison in Georgia.144 Was paroled.141

102. ii. John R. Rollins was born 12 April 1836 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.145 He died 3 October 1862 in Vincennes, Iowa.146 He was buried in Danville Green Cemetery, Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.111
Although the Danville town records give John Rollins' birth date as 12 April 1836, a date in accordance with his age as shown in the 1850 census and on his tombstone, all other records found to date show his birth as being circa 1837 to 1838. He is presumably the young boy less than five years of age shown in his father's household in the 1840 census of Danville, VT,147 and is shown as a school boy, age 14, living with his family in Danville in 1850.38 By 1860, John Rollins appears to have left Danville, and may have migrated to Iowa, but his 1860 census entry has yet to be found in Iowa records.
John R. Rollins enlisted on 8 March 1862, in Fort Madison, Iowa, as a private in Company E (Captain Curtis F. Conn), 7th Iowa Infantry.148
John's death occurred 1862 in Vincennes, IA. The cause of death was not noted in the death notice found in the Rollins Family Scrapbook, but it is probably safe to assume that it was related to the debility noted on his military discharge papers. He was buried in his family's lot in Green Cemetery. His tombstone inscription, located on the reverse of brother Samuel's, reads "John Rollins// Aged 26// Son of Benj. & Catherine Rollins// A member of Co. E// 7th Iowa Infantry// died at Vencenns, Iowa, Oct. 3, 1862".

-
104. iv. James Madison Rollins was born 7 July 1842 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.149 He died 1923 . The date is found on the large Rollins-Peck tombstone. No record of this death was found in the Vermont Vital Records indexes, 1871-1941. This gives support to the idea that James Madison Rollins actually died and was buried in some other location.111 He was buried in Danville Green Cemetery in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.111
-
+ 105. v. William Henry Harrison Rollins was born 20 January 1844 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont. He married Heiress Elmira Blodgett 17 December 1865 by H. T. Jones, Minister, first marriage for both in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.

Mary Frances Rollins was not found in the 1860 census enumeration of her father's household. However, there is a Nancy Rollins, age 5 years, shown in the household. No mention of a Nancy Rollins, daughter of Benjamin and Catherine, has been found in any other records: the handwritten family pages at the end of the Rollins scrapbook; the family monument in the Green Cemetery; or the Civil War pension application of Catherine Ward Rollins. Possibly Nancy is the nickname by which Mary Frances was known in the family.
Mary Frances Rollins died 11 August 1863 at the age of 8 years 11 months. She was a victim of diphtheria, one of the many Caledonia County residents who died in an epidemic that year.140 She was buried in the family lot in Green Cemetery near the stone marking the graves of her two older brothers. Her tombstone is inscribed "Mary F., dau of Benj. & Catherine Rollins, d. Aug. 11, 1863, Ae 8 ys. 11 mo".

-
+ 140. ii. Hiram W. Emerson was born 4 June 1838 date calculated from age at death. His mother's tombstone gives her date of death as 4 June ---. I would assume that his birth date probably coincides with her death date in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., Vermont. He married Mary E. Hale say 1862.
32. Betsey3 Ward (Josiah2, Samuel1) was born 1815.15 She married Harrison Weeks, son of Samuel Weeks and Ruth Eastman, 23 March 1836 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont, marriage performed by Shuback Boston, M.G.43 She died 1841.15 She was buried in Ward Cemetery in North Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.15
No direct evidence stating the parentage of Betsey Ward has been found, but it is unlikely that she comes from some Ward family unrelated to the Caledonia County Wards. She cannot be a daughter of Samuel Ward [Junior] as she was still living at the time of his death in 1835 and does not appear in any of the estate papers. There is no room for her birth in the family, barring twins, and all household residents shown in the 1820 and 1830 census entries for his family are accounted for. Thaddeus Ward has a daughter named Betsey, born in 1823, who is still living at the time he writes his will in 1843.
This leaves the family of Josiah Ward. Both the 1820 and 1830 census enumerations of his family have an unknown female present who could be Betsey. A pattern of marrying a sibling after the death of a spouse exists in this extended family [Amasa Ford Clark marries sisters Clarissa and Belinda Ward; John P. Weeks marries sisters Abigail and Hannah Ward; Lavinia Weeks marries brothers Benaiah and Samuel H. Ward]. The natural place for Harrison Weeks to seek a new spouse and mother to his children, including the infant Hiram, would be among his deceased wife's sisters. Betsey is deceased at the time her putative father Josiah wrote his will in 1859, but he makes no mention of her children. If the parentage is correct, their stepmother, Susannah (Ward) Weeks was also a daughter of Josiah, so naming these children may not have been perceived as important. Although Betsey's identity as a daughter of Josiah Ward is likely, it is still unconfirmed.
Harrison Weeks was born 21 May 1815 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.211 He married (2), after the death of his wife, her sister Susannah Ward, daughter of Josiah Ward and Susannah Hayward, 4 January 1842 in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., Vermont.212 He died 20 May 1888 in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.99 He was buried in Ward Cemetery, North Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.15

Known children of Hiram3 Ward and Sarah P. Collins were as follows:
-
143. i. John G.4 Cutler was born 1838 . Although the 1850 census entry lists him as John Ward, the tombstone in Mt. Pleasant cemetery probably identifies him as Hiram Ward's stepson, the son of his wife Sarah by her first husband John Cutler in Danville, Caledonia Co., Vermont.38 He died 27 June 1856 age 18 years in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia Co., Vermont.29 He was buried in Mt.
