By 4 May, the day before the Battle of the Wilderness, only about 400 men in the regiment were available for battle. Most of the rest, including Samuel, were ill. You doubtless ere this have received the sad news of your Dear Boy's death. I though I would write you a few lines, as I sat by his bed and done for him after he came to this hospital. he died with Diptheria, suffered much, but was very patient. I felt much interested in your son, and it was my prayr [sic] that his life might be spared, but God saw best to take to him self. he had the measles a few days before he came here, took cold, probably of the Diptheria, he could not bear to have me leave him, he was brought into [^my ward] Friday morning and the three he lived I done all for him that I could if he had been my own boy. My Husband & only Son are in the army, so I have an interest and an anxiety, with thousands of others.
I went to the dead house the next morning after he died his countenance showed suffering I got a lock of hair which I will enclose. he died Sunday night between 12 & 1 o'clock May 9th he was layed out with pants blouse & a good fine shirt, that I had.
I suppose Samls things will be sent home, the Chaplain attends to that. he told me his mother was not living. he had a Father, two Sisters & one Brother.
May you have Grace to sustain you in this hour of trial & affliction.
This cruel war brings sadness to many homes.

No direct evidence stating the parentage of Betsey Ward has been found, but it is unlikely that she comes from some Ward family unrelated to the Caledonia County Wards. She cannot be a daughter of Samuel Ward [Junior] as she was still living at the time of his death in 1835 and does not appear in any of the estate papers. There is no room for her birth in the family, barring twins, and all household residents shown in the 1820 and 1830 census entries for his family are accounted for. Thaddeus Ward has a daughter named Betsey, born in 1823, who is still living at the time he writes his will in 1843.
This leaves the family of Josiah Ward. Both the 1820 and 1830 census enumerations of his family have an unknown female present who could be Betsey. A pattern of marrying a sibling after the death of a spouse exists in this extended family [Amasa Ford Clark marries sisters Clarissa and Belinda Ward; John P. Weeks marries sisters Abigail and Hannah Ward; Lavinia Weeks marries brothers Benaiah and Samuel H. Ward]. The natural place for Harrison Weeks to seek a new spouse and mother to his children, including the infant Hiram, would be among his deceased wife's sisters. Betsey is deceased at the time her putative father Josiah wrote his will in 1859, but he makes no mention of her children. If the parentage is correct, their stepmother, Susannah (Ward) Weeks was also a daughter of Josiah, so naming these children may not have been perceived as important. Although Betsey's identity as a daughter of Josiah Ward is likely, it is still unconfirmed. She is memorialized on the tombstone of Harrison Weeks in Ward Cemetery, North Danville, Caledonia Co., VT.105
