2. Samuel2 Prescott (Samuel1); born 29 January 1799 in Vershire, Orange Co., VT; married Mary Hart, daughter of Nathaniel Hart and Joanna Matthews, July 1825 in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT; he died 22 May 1860 in Victory, Essex Co., VT, age given as 63 years; buried in Wheelock Village Cemetery, Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT.
The date of birth shown for Samuel is that given in the Prescott Memorial. Census data support this date, but the year of birth as calculated from his age of 63 years recorded at death would be 1797 (see census table).6 Although the Prescott Memorial states his birth place was Vershire, Vermont, no record of his birth was found in Vershire town records nor in the Vermont vital records index. No direct evidence showing his parentage has been found to date. However, a plausible argument may be made which connects Samuel Prescott of Wheelock, Vermont, with Samuel Prescott of Vershire, Vermont.
A deed found in the Waterbury land records dated 26 April 1825 and recorded the same day shows that a Samuel Prescott, Jr. of Waterbury bought land from Ebenezer Hill of Waterbury for $675. This land is described as “the whole of the 3rd Division Lot of Land in sd town [Waterbury] drawn to the original right of David Potter except eight acres heretofore [drawn] by Wm. Simpson now deceased to Abram Welch & 45 acres set off sd. lot to Wm. Simpson son & heir of the first mentioned Wm. Simpson being about 71 acres more or less. . .”. The purchase of this land corresponds closely with the purported date of Samuel's marriage to Mary Hart. The only record found to date which states a direct connection between this Samuel Prescott and the Samuel Prescott of Vershire is the deed in which this identical land is sold.
Saml. Prescott Junr. deed to Saml. & Sherburn Prescott. Saml. Prescott Junr. of Waterbury for $600 by Saml. & Sherburn Prescott of Vershier [sic] in Orange Co., Vt. ”the whole of the 3rd Division Lot of Land in sd town [Waterbury] drawn to the original right of David Potter except eight acres heretofore [drawn] by Wm. Simpson now deceased to Abram Welch & 45 acres set off sd. lot to Wm. Simpson son & heir of the first mentioned Wm. Simpson I meaning to convey the same land which was deeded to me by Ebenezer Hill by deed dated April 26th 1825 supposed to be about 71 acres more or less . . .” dated 1 October 1827 and recorded the same day.The use of the term Junior in this deed does not necessarily indicate a father-son relationship. Before the nineteenth century, it was frequently used to differentiate two individuals of the same name living in the same area. However, in this deed, the two men are differenced by place of residence and no evidence of another Samuel Prescott in Waterbury at this time has been found. Therefore, it may indicate a father-son relationship.
The identity of Samuel Prescott, farmer, of Wheelock with Samuel Prescott, Junior, of Waterbury has also not been proven. There are very strong connections, however. Samuel Prescott of Wheelock first appears in the Wheelock land records in a deed dated 18 October 1828 in which he buys "one equal half of lot No. Eleven in said Wheelock to be divided according to quantity and quality" from Jonathan S. Miles of Wheelock for the sum of $150. This land had been sold to Miles that same day for the same amount of money by Nathaniel Hart, Samuel's father-in-law. Both deeds were executed and recorded the same day and witnessed by the same men: Josiah Lane, the Justice of the Peace, and John Hart, probably Mary's eighteen year old brother. This date corresponds closely to the birth of Samuel's and Mary's first son, Andrew, born 3 October 1828. It is very likely that Mary had returned to her mother's neighborhood for the birth of her first child. Perhaps this land was an inducement to keep the new parents in Wheelock.
One other strong connection exists supporting the identity of the two Samuels: Nathaniel Hart, Jr., brother-in-law of Samuel Prescott of Wheelock, would marry a young woman of Waterbury, Louisa Lamphear, in November of 1829; his brother Daniel would eventually marry, as his second wife, her probable sister, Sophronia.
Samuel Prescott appears as the head of household on the censuses of 1830,7 1840, 8 and the census of 7 September 1850 in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT.9 These census records support the picture of his family shown below, but do not give further clues as to his origin. He continued to maintain a close relationship with his wife's family, apparently going into debt more than once to help Nathaniel Jr. After the death of his father-in-law, Samuel Prescott and Nathaniel Hart were forced to go to court to settle the administration of his estate. The administration, begun in February of 1843, was not finalized until some time after their 28 November 1850 Probate Court appearance.
Although research in the Wheelock land records has not been completed, Samuel and Mary (Hart) Prescott may have removed to Victory in Essex County, Vermont. It is here that Samuel died 22 May 1860. He is buried with his wife in Wheelock Village Cemetery, Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT. The tombstone reads "Samuel Prescott// died// May 22, 1860// aged 63// Mary Hart// his wife// died Apr. 16, 1866// aged 62."
Mary Hart was born 6 September 1803 in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT. Her birth was also listed as occurring on 6 August 1803 in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, calculated from age at death. She died 16 April 1866 in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, age 62 years 8 months 10 days; cause of death: consumption; widowed; parents Nathaniel and Joanna Hart. The listing also occurs under the name "Mary Hart." She was buried in Wheelock Village Cemetery, Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, The tombstone is inscribed "Samuel Prescott// died// May 22, 1860// aged 63// Mary Hart// his wife// died Apr. 16, 1866// aged 62." . She is probably the female age 20-30 enumerated in the household of Samuel Prescott in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1830.7 She is probably the female age 30-40 enumerated in the household of Samuel Prescott in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1840.8 Mary Hart appears as Mary Prescott in the census of 7 September 1850, Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Samuel Prescott. Mary Hart appears as Mary Prescott in the census of 22 June 1860, Victory, Essex Co., VT, in the household of Freedom Densmore Prescott.
Known children of Samuel2 Prescott and Mary Hart all born Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, were as follows:
He is probably the male under 5 enumerated in the household of Samuel Prescott in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1830.7 His birth record in the Vermont vital records index (the original has not been found yet) and his probable presence in the 1830 census listing are the only pieces of evidence found which point to his existence. He is not part of the family picture shown in the 1840 census listing and was not found in the 1850 census of Caledonia County. Although it appears that he probably died as a young child between 1830 and 1840, no record of that death has been found. Ironically, although his birth record exists, the birth records of his two brothers have not been found.
3. Sherburne2 Prescott (Samuel1); born 2 June 1800 in Vershire, Orange Co., VT; his birth was also listed as occurring circa 1800 in VT calculated from age at death; married Judith Haseltine, daughter of Eben and Abigail (Knapp) Haseltine, 11 November 1828 in Moulton by Daniel Warren, M.G. No state is listed after Moulton. It is possibly in New Hampshire; he died 27 March 1867 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, age 67 years; buried in Waterbury Center Cemetery, Waterbury Center, Washington Co., VT . This stone reads "Sherborne Prescott// died// Mar. 27, 1867// ae 67 yrs."

Administration of the estate of Judith Haseltine was granted on 2 July 1879 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT. Her estate was settled on 22 February 1881 by decree of distribution. Her real estate appraised at $650 and personal estate appraised at $213.75 was divided between her two grandchildren Frank B. Hill and Ella R. Hill. These two were grantees of a third grandchild, Alfred E. Hill, the three being the sole heirs of Judah Prescott.
Known children of Sherburne2 Prescott and Judith Haseltine were as follows:
He appears as Sherman Prescott, age 23, in the household of Alpheus Robins, hotel keeper, in the census enumerated on 8 October 1850 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT.14
First, the enumerator of the 1850 U.S. census in Waterbury, Vermont, lists Sherburn as "Sherman." This man may actually be Sherburn Prescott. He is possibly a son of Sherburn and Judith (Hazeltine) Prescott.
She was also known as Abbie A. Prescott. She was also known as Ada A. Prescott. She is probably the female age age 5-10 enumerated in the household of Sherburne Prescott in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in 1840.10 Abigail Prescott appears as Abigail Prescott, age 16, in the census enumerated on 23 October 1850, Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the household of Sherburne Prescott. He appears as head of household in the census of 19 July 1860 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, with Fanny A. Wrisley, Lydia J. Prescott, and Althena J. Prescott.15
Administration of the estate of Amos M. Prescott was granted on 5 May 1863 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, . Also appointed were Noah Robinson, Joseph Barns and Trueman B. Colbey of Waterbury, appraisers, and Paul Dillingham and Charles Clark of Waterbury, commissioners. The inventory of his estate was filed on 1 August 1863 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, . This inventory included the home farm, valued at $3000; the Back farm in Stowe, $1000; the Wrisley farm on the river, $950, and land "deeded by H. D. Hutchinson, $0.01." The total inventory was valued at $5717.01.
Fanny A. Wrisley was born 16 April 1838 in VT. She married (2) Roswell D. Lillie before 30 April 1866, the date when she made application for dower as "Fanny A. Lillie, late widow of Amos Prescott." Although the Prescott Memorial lists her as "Fanny Wellsley," her correct maiden name is probably "Wrisley." The young man, Charles R. Wrisley, holding real estate in his own right, and living in her household in 1860, may be her older brother. Also, included as part of husband Amos Prescott's inventory is the "Wrisley farm on the river" valued at $950. Fanny A. Wrisley appears as Fanny A. Prescott, age 22, in the census enumerated on 19 July 1860, Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the household of Amos M. Prescott. She and her family have not yet been located in 1870 census records. She removed to Iowa some time between the birth of son Clarence Lillie in 1867 and the birth of daughter Cora in 1872. She is found in her husband Roswell's household in the 1880 census enumeration of Nashua, Chickasaw Co., Iowa, with children Clarence and Cora Lillie, Lydia, Alphena and Harvey Prescott.
Known children of Amos M.2 Prescott and Fanny A. Wrisley all born Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, were as follows:

He was head of household on the census of 1840 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT.16
Eliza Ann Eaton was born 5 March 1812 in Corinth, VT, the daughter of Peter and --- (Pike) Eaton. Her age at death gives a birthdate of March 1812. Her birth was also listed as occurring circa 1815 in VT. She died 27 May 1874 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, cause of death: phthisis, age 62 years 2 months. She is listed as married. She was buried in Waterbury Center Cemetery, Waterbury Center, Washington Co., VT . Her stone reads "Elisa A.// wife of// David Prescott// died// May 27, 1874// ae 62 yrs." There was no evidence of a David Prescott tombstone near her. She is probably the female age 20-30 enumerated in the household of David Prescott in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in 1840.16 She appears as Eliza A. Prescott, age 45, head of family in the census enumerated on 23 July 1860 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, with Carlos Prescott.17 She appears as Eliza A. Known children of David2 Prescott and Eliza Ann Eaton were as follows:
His name is given as P. C. Prescott on his tombstone. The identity is highly probable as the date of death and parentage, as well as the Civil War affiliation shown on the tombstone correspond with the information in the death listing of Carlos Prescott. He is probably the male age under 5 enumerated in the household of David Prescott in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in 1840.16 Carlos Prescott, age 19, appears in the census enumerated on 23 July 1860, Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the household of Eliza Ann Eaton. It is entry no. 20, but no day is given; buried in Waterbury Center Cemetery, Waterbury Center, Washington Co., VT . His stone reads "Harvey Prescott// died// Feb. 24, 1861// ae 48 yrs."
Harvey Prescott is named executor and is a legatee in the will of Samuel Prescott on 24 June 1837 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the following manner: "The residue and remainder of all my estate both real and personal not herein otherwise disposed of I give and grant to my son Harvey Prescott and his heirs forever - he being chargeable with the support of his mother Betsey and sister Polly as here before mentioned, and while thus supporting them to his right to occupy such portions of my real estate as I have given them the use of during their lives for their support or as surety for such support." He was present as the executor at the probate of the estate of Samuel Prescott on 21 November 1837 Montpelier, Washington Co., VT. He was head of household on the census of 1840 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT.19 He appears as Henry Prescott, age 38, head of household in the census enumerated on 23 October 1850 in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, with Hannah Bridges, Mary J. 9. Huldah2 Prescott (Samuel1); born 18 February 1819 in Vershire, Orange Co., VT; born 1818 in VT; married Stillman Pollard between 1840 and 1843 in WI Stillman Pollard's household in 1840 does not contain a female. Huldah is probably the female age 20-30 in her brother Lyman Prescott's household at this time. The couple's first child, a daughter, is age 6 in 1850, placing her birth between 2 June 1853 and 1June 1854 (or 6 September 1853 to 5 September 1854, using the enumeration date); married Samuel Bryant probably in Walworth County, Wisconsin. The marriage appears to have taken place after 5 September 1850, the date of the 1850 census enumeration, and the birth of the couple's daughter Mary, ca 1853.
Huldah Prescott is a legatee in the will of Samuel Prescott on 24 June 1837 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the following manner: "I also give to my daughter Huldah Prescott the sum of Fifty Dollars current money of the United States to be paid within two years from the time of my decease, also materials such as wool flax and feathers for two Beds, bedding therefor and the privilege of remaining with my executor and manufacturing the same into Beds & bedding therefore, she working for him at the same time enough to pay for her Board." Huldah Prescott is probably the female age 20-30 enumerated in the household of Lyman Prescott in Mequanigo, Milwaukee Co., WI, on 22 July 1840. She appears as head of household in the census of 5 September 1850 in Mukwanego, Waukesha Co., WI, with Betsy Matson, Lyman Prescott, Sarah Barnard, Elizabeth Esther Pollard, Stillman Pollard, Lorenzo D. Prescott, and Edward H. Prescott.23 Huldah Prescott appears as Hulda Bryant, age 42, in the census enumerated on 18 July 1860, East Troy, Walworth Co., WI, in the household of Samuel Bryant. Circa 1870 Huldah Prescott resided in Troy, Walworth Co., WI.
Stillman Pollard died before 5 September 1850 in Walworth Co., WI, He does not appear in Huldah (Prescott) Pollard's household in the 1850 census. The value of real estate also seems to indicate an intestate division of property: $1000 for the widow and $500 for each of the two children.
Known children of Huldah2 Prescott and Stillman Pollard were as follows:
Stillman Pollard, age 3, appears in the census enumerated on 5 September 1850, Mukwanego, Waukesha Co., WI, in the household of Huldah Prescott. Stillman Pollard, age 13, appears in the census enumerated on 18 July 1860, East Troy, Walworth Co., WI, in the household of Samuel Bryant. He appears as head of household in the census of 11 August 1870 in Penn, McLeod Co., MN.24 His occupation is listed as teaching school.

(See census table).26 Lyman Prescott is a legatee in the will of Samuel Prescott on 24 June 1837 Waterbury, Washington Co., VT, in the following manner: "I give to my son Lyman Prescott now a minor the sum of one hundred Dollars current money, to be paid to him when he attains the age of twenty one years - should he not so long live, then the same is to go to pay the expense of his last sickness, remainder to my Executor." He was head of household on the census of 22 July 1840 in Mequanigo, Milwaukee Co., WI.27 Lyman Prescott, age 30, appears in the census enumerated on 5 September 1850, Mukwanego, Waukesha Co., WI, in the household of Huldah Prescott. He appears as head of household in the census of 30 July 1860 in Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, with Sarah Barnard, Lorenzo D. Prescott, Edward H. Prescott, Romanzo Prescott, and Laura A. Prescott.28 Circa 1870 Lyman Prescott resided in Sparta, Monroe Co., WI. He appears as head of household in the census of 3 July 1870 in Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, with Edward H. Prescott and Lorenzo D. Prescott.29
The Lyman Prescott family entry in the 1870 U.S. census includes Lyman and his two older sons Lorenzo and Edward. The initial assumption is that his wife Sarah and younger children Romanzo and Laura died before this enumeration. However, there is evidence that the two younger children were still living at this time and that Sarah (Barnard) Prescott remarried a man named Cole. It is possible that Lyman and Sarah were divorced before 1870. He appears as head of household in the census of 4 June 1880 in Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, with Mary Johnson, Albert Prescott, and Mary Prescott.30 His occupation is listed as a farmer. Lyman Prescott appears as Lyman Prescott, age 80, in the census enumerated on 14 June 1900, Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, in the household of Lorenzo D. Prescott as his father.
Sarah Barnard was born 30 December 1823 in Farman, Canada. Her birth was also listed as occurring circa 1825 in VT. Sarah Barnard appears as Sarah Prescott, age 25, in the census enumerated on 5 September 1850, Mukwanego, Waukesha Co., WI, in the household of Huldah Prescott. Sarah Barnard appears as Sarah Prescott, age 36, in the census enumerated on 30 July 1860, Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, in the household of Lyman Prescott.
Known children of Lyman2 Prescott and Sarah Barnard were as follows:
Mary Johnson was born circa 1842 in Norway. Mary Johnson appears as Mary Prescott, wife, age 38, in the census enumerated on 4 June 1880, Lafayette Twp., Monroe Co., WI, in the household of Lyman Prescott.
