Descendants of Jareb Palmer and Esther Rice
of Canton Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania

Generation Three

     83. Norman3 Palmer (Stephen2, Jareb1) was born circa 1814 in PA;96,4 married Sarah Dobbins say 1845;99 he died 1893 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;4 buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4

Sarah Dobbins , the daughter of John and Rebecca (McKean) Dobbins, was born 29 July 1820 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.96,4,99,38,4 She died 3 September 1900 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4,4 She was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4

Known children of Norman3 Palmer and Sarah Dobbins were as follows:

  • i. Julia L.4 Palmer was born circa 1846 in Bradford Co., PA;99,4 buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4
According to the online Glenwood Cemetery transcription, Julia Palmer died in 1853; however, she is enumerated with her family on the 1860 federal census. This date must have been misread, mistranscribed, or an error made on the tombstone inscription. It's also possible that the years inscribed for her sister Fannie, 1845 to 1861, refer to Julia.
  • ii. Fanny G. Palmer was born circa 1847 in Bradford Co., PA;99 buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4
According to the online Glenwood Cemetery transcription, Fannie Palmer died in 1861; however, it's her sister Julia, not Fannie, who is enumerated in the Norman Palmer household on the 1860 federal census. This date may have been misread, mistranscribed, or an error made on the tombstone inscription. It's also possible that the years inscribed for her sister Julia, 1846 to 1853, refer to Fannie.
  • 108. iii. Helen Palmer, born January 1850 Towanda Twp., Bradford Co., PA; married Eugene Linderman; married James K. Vanbuskirk.
  • iv. Georgia N. Palmer was born 1854 in Bradford Co., PA;4 she died 1856 in Bradford Co., PA;4 buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4
  • v. Rebecca Palmer was born circa 1858 in Bradford Co., PA;28,4 she died 1863 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;4 buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4
The daughter born 1858, dying in 1863, and buried in Glenwood Cemetery, is called Sarah in the online transcription. Either this is an error and should read "Rebecca" or Rebecca was also known as Sarah.

     84. Stephen R.3 Palmer (Stephen2, Jareb1) was born August 1822 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;136,137,38,5 married (1) Alice (--?--) say 1849;99 married (2) Anna E.      Stephen R. Palmer was married twice, first to a woman named Alice, born about 1828 in Pennsylvania;99 next to a woman named Anna, born about 1829 in Ohio.137 It's easy to assume that the 1850 census entry, Alice, was in error, especially when Stephen R. and Anna E. Palmer provide the information in 1900 that they had been married for 51 years.38 Stephen's will and the 1860 federal census document, however, that Stephen had three sons: Alvin, John, and Arthur. Anna E. Palmer was the mother of only one child, Stephen's youngest son Arthur. Arthur Palmer resides next to his parents in Athens Borough in 1900 and provides additional corroboration for his mother's identity by stating that his mother had been born in Ohio. Stephen's older sons, Alvin and John, are enumerated next to each other in Smithfield Twp. in 1900.38 Both state that their mother was born in Pennsylvania, verifying the existence of the first wife, Alice.

Alice (--?--) was born circa 1828 in PA.99

Family A1641511 in the E. E. Case manuscript covers the three marriages of Edmond Case, son of Elihu Case. The information was compiled from Hiram A. Case's records and two published genealogies, Graves Family (Edmond's second father-in-law), p. 191, and Stevens Genealogy (Edmond's first mother-in-law), p. 41. No further information with respect to either genealogy was given.37

           95. Irene3 Case (Charlotte2Palmer, Jareb1) was born 17 July 1816 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA;37,26,91,122,92,123 married (1) Charles Nathan Strait 10 March 1840 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA;37,115,84,124 married (3) Thomas Edsall say 1881;37 she died 15 September 1885 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA;122,124 buried in Case Cemetery, Troy, Bradford Co., PA.149,122

           E. B. Strait, Irene's son, provided the information for her family A1641512 in the E. E. Case manuscript. His letter no. 1227 dated October 1904 was written nine years after his mother's death. His information appears complete when dealing with his own parents and himself; is less so when dealing with his sister; and information on his mother's subsequent marriages is sketchy at best. In addition, despite living in Troy himself, he does not include his mother's date of death.37

According to the E. E. Case manuscript, Irene was married three times: first to Charles Nathan Strait, second to an unknown man, and third to Thomas Edsall who died in 1881. However, she appears as Irene, or Irena, Strait in all U.S. censuses from 1850 through 1880. If she did remarry, she appears to have retained her first married name through each one.37

Charles Nathan Strait was born 29 May 1819 probably in Columbia Twp., Bradford Co., PA,, the son of Burton and Laura Helen (Burton) Strait.37 He died 20 January 1860 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA.37,122 He was buried in Case Cemetery, Troy, Bradford Co., PA.122

      • 130. ii. Ellen Augusta Strait, born 10 October 1850 Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA; married Morton R. Foster.

Thomas Edsall was born circa 1812 in NJ.96 He died 19 March 1881.37

There were no known children of Irene3 Case and Thomas Edsall.

             96. Nathan Palmer3 Case (Charlotte2Palmer, Jareb1) was born 24 November 1819 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA;37,3 married Sarah Maria Codington 13 August 1846 in Hector, Tompkins Co., NY; he and Sarah Maria Codington were divorced 1857;37 he died March 1872 in Lariston, Trinity Co., CA.

The E. E. Case manuscript's family A1641514 is that of Nathan Palmer Case. The information was obtained from Sara M. Kiff's letter no. 1225 dated November 1903. Sara is probably Nathan's granddaughter, the daughter of Della Inez Case and Stanley Kiff. She was born in 1876, four years after her grandfather died. Nathan, like his brotherAdrial, left the Bradford Co. area relatively early, removing first to Tompkins Co., New York; then Shawnee Co., Kansas; and finally Trinity Co., California. The family lost track of him several times. Given Sara's family's presence in Kansas in 1880, it is likely that they kept closer contact with Nathan than did his Pennsylvania-based relatives.37

Sarah Maria Codington was born 24 June 1824 in Mecklenburg, Schuyler Co., NY,, daughter of John M. and Sarah Marie (Owen) Coddington.37,150,3 She married (2) Joseph Robinson 28 April 1857.37 She married (3) Clark Daggett 26 May 1864.37 She died 22 January 1902 in Trumansburg, Tompkins Co., NY.37

             97. Jareb3 Case (Charlotte2Palmer, Jareb1) was born 26 March 1822 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;37,26,91,122,136,92 married Louisa Selenda Cady 12 May 1847 in Hector, Schuyler Co., NY;37,52,91 he died 9 June 1894 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;37,122,136 buried 11 June 1894 in Case Cemetery, Troy, Bradford Co., PA.122,136

Frank P. Case, son of Jareb Case, provided the basic information for the E. E. Case manuscript on his father's family A1641515. His letter, no. 953, was dated May 1903, when Frank was 44 years of age and his mother was still living. Handwritten notes on the page apparently came from followup correspondence with Jareb's daughter Ida and her son Merton Green. There were apparently three letters, nos. 1072, 8831, and 10783, but no dates are entereed. However, the notes include the January 1912 death of Louisa (Cady) Case, so the letters must have come after that date.37

Louisa Selenda Cady was born 7 December 1831 in Hector, Schuyler Co., NY,, daughter of Philip Cady and --- Rice.37,26,91,122,92 She died 28 January 1912 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA.37,122 She was buried in Case Cemetery, Troy, Bradford Co., PA.151,122

Known children of Jareb3 Case and Louisa Selenda Cady were as follows:

Despite the fact that "Hiram A. Case's notes" serve as frequent sources in the E. E. Case manuscript, informaton for his own family A1641516 comes from two of his children, Wm. P. Case, his first child by his first wife, and Delos W. Case, his first child by his second wife, in letters nos. 975 dated February 1904 and 954 dated May 1903, respectively. Hiram had died less than three years prior to the first of these letters and his sons were not elderly, William born in 1846 and Delos in 1878. The information provided is surprisingly complete and accurate, even including Eunice (Harkness) (Mosher) Case's first marriage and the children by that marriage.37

Leaphe Ann Smead was born 11 November 1825 in Columbia, Bradford Co., PA,, daughter of Francis and Priscilla (Wilsey) Smead.37,26,92,123 She died 9 January 1877 died 1:00 am in Troy, Bradford Co., PA.37,84

Lottie and Elmer Pearsall probably married shortly before 28 December 1882. She executed a deed on this date reiterating a contract dated 9 December 1881. In this earlier contract, she was called Lottie Emma Case.52
Lottie and Elmer had an infant child that died young.37

Adrial Hebard Case provided the Case manuscript the information on his own family A1641517 in letter no. 1226 dated July 1903. He was an old man, almost 75 years of age, at the time. Followup contact with his adopted son provided the information that "Hib" had died in Topeka, Kansas in 1908.37

Helen Augusta Kiff was born 3 January 1836 in Homer, NY.124,159,107 She died 13 March 1870 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS.37,124,159,107 She was buried on 15 March 1870 in Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS.159,107

There were no known children of Adrial Hebard3 Case and Lucia Ophelia Benton.

               100. Laura A.3 Rennells (Louise2Palmer, Jareb1) was born April 1824 in PA;126,161,129 married Ephraim F. Mills 18 October 1863 at the residence of Joel Rennels in Grattan Twp., Kent Co., MI, marriage performed by Salisbury Mason, J. P;127 she and Ephraim F. Mills were divorced before 7 June 1900 . Despite the fact that Laura (Rennells) Mills, living in her brother's houseold in 1900, states that she was a widow, her husband Ephraim, still living in Cannon Twp., reports in that census that he was divorced. He also states that he was married 24 years. That entry was subsequently scratched out, but if accurate, this would place the couple's divorce 24 years after their marriage, or about 1887;162 buried in Alton Cemetery, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., MI.127

The evidence surrounding Laura A., or Luranna, Rennells places her birth sometime between the year 1822 inscribed on her tombstone to the year 1833 derived from her stated age of 30 years at the time of her 1863 marriage.127 Probably the April 1824 date reported on the 1900 census is the most accurate; at least the year 1824 is the one that occurs most frequently. She married Ephraim Mills, a man probably fourteen years her junior, in 1863. The couple had one son, Eber R., and apparently remained together until their son reached his majority in 1887. Just as evidence as to Laura's birth date presents problems, her date of death is also questionnable. Burial information states that she died 18 Nov 1907 and is buried in Alton Cemetery in Vergennes Twp.127 A Lorenna Mills, however, is reported on the 1910 federal census enumeration of Grand Rapids, Michigan.163Little Sisters of the Poor, Lorenna Mills, Grand Rapids city, ward 3, ED 59, p. 16A [102] This woman is one of the institution's inhabitants, listed as feeble-minded, an 86-year-old woman born in Pennsylvania. This data corresponds exactly to what is known about Laura (Rennells) Mills and makes the burial information suspect.

Ephraim F. Mills was born 19 August 1838 in NY.25,129,127,127,162 He died 4 April 1917 in Cannon Twp., Kent Co., MI.127 He was buried in Cannonsburg Cemetery, Cannon Twp., Kent Co., MI.127

Known children of Laura A.3 Rennells and Ephraim F. Mills were:

               102. James Monroe3 Palmer (Nathan2, Jareb1) was born 4 January 1825 in PA;3,20,4 married Jane Taylor 10 October 1850 in Troy, Bradford Co., PA;25,4,165 he died 26 May 1904 in Roaring Branch, Lycoming Co., PA;4,165 buried 29 May 1904 in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4,165

James Monroe Palmer enlisted on 11 November 1864,, Company F, 82nd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers.165 He was discharged from military service on 13 July 1865 Hall's Hill, VA.165

Jane Taylor was born 24 December 1832 in NY.4,20,165 She died 29 September 1910 in Canton, Bradford Co., PA.4,165 She was buried in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4

Jane (Taylor) Palmer provides us with an interesting comment on bureaucratic red tape: "My maiden name was Phebe Jane Taylor and in my applicatioon for pension I wish to drop the name Phebe to save so much writing on all my papers."165

Known children of James Monroe3 Palmer and Jane Taylor were as follows:

          • i. James J.4 Palmer was born 15 August 1851 in PA.20,165
          • ii. John G. Palmer was born 7 April 1854 in PA.20,165,165

          • v. Seth Palmer was born 5 March 1870 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.20
          • vi. Fred J. Palmer was born 1 April 1872 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.165

               103. Jareb3 Palmer (Nathan2, Jareb1) was born 29 February 1828 in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;166,167,168,169,133,133 married Elizabeth (--?--) 2 December 1866 in Cherokee, IA, marriage performed by George Bannister, county judge;166,168,133,133 he and Elizabeth (--?--) were divorced August 1890;133 he died between 4 October 1910 and 25 February 1911 in Lakefield, Jackson Co., MN.97,133

Like the grandfather for whom he was named, Jareb Palmer's name appears in many variations. He's called Jacob in his father's biography7 and in the court clerk's transcription of his father's will.67 Census spellings include Jerreb, Jerrah, and Jareb. On Civil War service records he appears as Jareb, Jerub, and Jared. His signature, though, was always "Jareb Palmer."

Jareb Palmer's 1907 Declaration for Pension states that he was a school teacher at the time he enlisted in the Sioux City Cavalry. He must have been an interesting teacher, because his early life in MInnesota and Iowa was adventurous, to say the least. Jareb was a resident of Springfield, Minnesota, in March 1857, when a band of renegade Sioux led by Inkpaduta attacked the town. He was one of the defenders in the Thomas home and aided the Springfield refugees in their run to Spirit Lake.170 Jareb later wrote an account of the massacre, an event remembered by all concerned. R. A. Smith, in a deposition in Palmer's pension application file, states, "I first became acquainted with Mr. Palmer in April 1857. I was on the relief expedition from Ft. Dodge to Spirti lake in that year and met him coming as a refugee from the Indian troubles in Minn. . . . I lived neighbor to him and saw him frequently from the summer of 1857 to the time he went into the war in 1861. "133

Jareb settled in Spirit Lake, Dickinson Co., Iowa, after the Indian troubles. His brother, Eber, joined him there before 1859 as the two are both named on the Spirit Lake township tax list of that year.171 The two shared a residence and are enumerated with two other young single men in the 1860 federal census of Spirit Lake township.172 In November 1861, Jareb enlisted in Captain Millard's Sioux City Cavalry to defend the frontier. This company was transferred to the 7th Iowa Cavalry in 1863 as Company I, becoming the 7th's premier unit. He remained in service for three years and was honorably discharged in November 1864.133

Jareb Palmer enlisted on 14 November 1861,, as a private in the Sioux City Cavalry (Captain Millard's Company), afterwards Company I, 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry . Capt. Millard's Company was formed to protect settlers from the Indians. This company was transferred in toto July 1863 to the 7th Iowa Cavalry as Company I.133,133 He was discharged from military service on 26 November 1864 Sioux City, IA.133

In 1866, Jareb married Elizabeth (possibly Terwilliger) in Cherokee County, Iowa, a woman almost twenty years his junior. The couple had six children, five born in Spirit Lake, and the sixth, Benjamin, born after the family's move to Lakefield in Jackson County, Minnesota. In August 1890, the two divorced. Although Elizabeth, or Anna E., remarried a man named John Wepfer, I have not located her or the youngest son in census records to date.

After Jareb Palmer's divorce, his daughter Minerva appears to have kept house for him. The two are enumerated with Minerva's daughter in son John Palmer's household in 1900167 and Jareb is head of household with Minerva and his granddaughter in 1910. At the time, he was serving as the town judge in Lakefield.169 Jareb Palmer died some time after 4 October 1910, the date of his last pension payment, and 25 Feb 1911, the date his death was reported to the United States Pension Agency.133

Although Jareb's birthplace identifies him as a member of one of the Bradford County Palmer families, it doesn't tell us which one. In a deposition dated 8 July 1895, though, Jareb himself provides additional evidence.

          Q. Did you ever have the mumps?
          A. Yes sir. I had them when I was about 28 years old but they never affected my testicles any. I don't know just what year it was but it was after I came here. My brothers would certainly know if I had beenaffected with varicocele since I was a boy. Jos. B. Palmer, Jenny Lind, Ark., David Palmer, also Jenny Lind, Eber Palmer, Fremont, Nebr.133
This constellation of names places Jareb in the family of Nathan and Matilda Palmer. His pension file contains two depositions from brothers Eber and David Palmer. David's statement is especially important.
I am a brother to the claimant Jared [sic] Palmer who served in Co. I 7th Ia. Vol. Cav. but you will know as much about him as I do for he left home when I was about eight years old and I did not see him again until 1885. When father died he came home and remained there about two weeks and in 1890 I was with him again for about two weeks. . . . Joseph B. Palmer lives here but he never met his brother but one time, in 1885, and would know no more than I do about him, but Eber Palmer who lives in this town was in a position to know some thing about him.133
Nathan Palmer, the father, died 19 April 1885. David Palmer was eight years old in 1856 and Jareb was in Minnesota by 1857. Eber Palmer resided with Jareb in Spirit Lake, Iowa, in 1860.

Eber Palmer, in a deposition testifying to Jareb's disability, provides a picture of nineteenth century life. "When he was discharged we lived some 25 miles apart and for twenty years we met at least once each year, but I have not met him for seven or eight years. . ."133 In a time when 25 miles is a half-hour drive, it's hard to imagine a time when this distance required a special journey.

Elizabeth (--?--) was born circa 1847 in OH.166,168,133 She married (2) John Wepfer before 26 June 1894.133

Known children of Jareb3 Palmer and Elizabeth (--?--) were as follows:

          • i. Nathan J.4 Palmer was born May 1867 in Spirit Lake Twp., Dickinson Co., IA.166,168,167
          • 142. ii. Herbert E. Palmer, born 20 September 1869 Spirit Lake Twp., Dickinson Co., IA; married Bertha (--?--).
          • 143. iii. John G. Palmer, born June 1871 Spirit Lake Twp., Dickinson Co., IA; married Bertha Lorgen.
          • 144. iv. Minerva B. Palmer, born 6 February 1875 Spirit Lake Twp., Dickinson Co., IA; married (--?--) Ware.
          • v. Francis Palmer was born 23 June 1877 in Spirit Lake Twp., Dickinson Co., IA.168,133
          • vi. Benjamin Palmer was born 8 June 1884.133,133

               104. Nathan3 Palmer Jr. (Nathan2, Jareb1) was born circa 1829 in PA;83 married Rachel E. McMurray circa 1855.83

Rachel E. McMurray , the daughter of Russell McMurray, was born June 1834 in PA.83,134 She died 1 August 1861 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.134 She was buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.134

Known children of Nathan3 Palmer Jr. and Rachel E. McMurray were as follows:

          • i. Ida M.4 Palmer was born circa 1858 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.83
          • ii. Sarah Palmer was born circa 1859 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.83

               105. Eber3 Palmer (Nathan2, Jareb1) was born 24 June 1834 in Canton, Bradford Co., PA;3,25,166,172,173,174,175,176 married Lydia Elvira Denney 24 October 1860 in Port Byron, Rock Island Co., IL, married by Reverend Porter;25,174 he died 20 November 1920 in Clear Lake, IA.174

Eber, or Heber, Palmer was a member of his father's household in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA, in 1850;3 but by 1860, he had joined his brother Jareb in the frontier town of Spirit Lake in Dickinson Co., Iowa.172 In January 1865, near the end of the Civil War, Eber enlisted in his brother's former regiment, the 7th Iowa Cavalry in Company K. This company was stationed for most of his year-long service in the region of Spirit Lake, allowing him to care for his wife and young daughter.174 Soon after his discharge, he relocated in neighboring Center Grove township and left the farming profession to begin a new career as a merchant.166 His brother Jareb had been a mail carrier and Eber went a step farther, becoming the postmaster of Spirit Lake in 1871,177 a post he still held when the 1880 federal census of Center Grove was taken.25

Eber Palmer enlisted on 20 January 1865,, as a private in Company K, 7th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry.174 He was discharged from military service after 20 January 1866 Davenport, IA.174

Eber Palmer and his family remained in Dickinson County, Iowa, until 1888 when he began a series of moves that would take him far afield. From Iowa, he moved to Fremont, Dodge Co., Nebraska, in 1888; to Arlington, Nebraska, in 1893, then back to Fremont. In 1895, he joined brothers Joseph B. and David Palmer in Jenny Lind, Sebastian Co., Arkansas. Here, he worked as a pump man in the mines.133 He lived a short time in Hume, Missouri, in 1907. Then he and wife Lydia joined their newly-widowed daughter's household in Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa. The couple was enumerated there in April 1910.175

It's interesting that Eber Palmer was enumerated twice on the 1920 federal census, first in Texarkana, Texas, on 7 January 1920,173 and then in daughter Carrie Sondrol's household in Clear Lake, Iowa, later that month.176 Perhaps it's even more interesting that Eber's letters to the Bureau of Pensions allow proof that the two men are the same. Eber Palmer died later that same year, 20 November 1920, in Clear Lake, Iowa.174
