Descendants of Jareb Palmer and Esther Rice
of Canton Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania

Generation Two

     76. Stephen2 Palmer (Jareb1) was born say 1789 in Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT;109 married Harty White say 1813;5,5 he died circa 1827 , the year he is first listed as "dead" in the Canton Twp. tax assessments in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.5

Stephen Palmer first appears in Bradford County records on the 1814 Canton tax list. His entry, like brother Russell's is squeezed onto the bottom of a page. The two young men appear sequentially on the 1815 list, following the Jareb Palmer entry and preceding that of Abraham Palmer. In 1814, Stephen was taxed on two oxen; he was taxed on one cow in 1815.5 Stephen and Russell are absent from succeeding Canton tax lists. They evidently relocated in Troy Twp. The two appear, sequentially, on the first Troy tax list in 1817. Both men own 100 acres of land.116 Stephen reappears on the Canton tax lists in 1826 and he is noted as "dead" on the 1827 Canton list.5

Children. Stephen Palmer's only appearance as head of household is the Troy Twp. federal census enumeration of 1820. His family includes a boy and three girls under ten, as well as himself and his wife, both age 26-45.113 Fortunately for Palmer family researchers, the 1828 Canton Twp. tax list includes a listing of "Poor Children". This list includes Harty Palmer and four children: Chloe, age 11, Loisa, age 10, Dorinda [?], age 8, and Stephen R., age 5. This identifies Stephen's wife, the three girls from the 1820 census, and a second boy born circa 1823. This same Stephen R. Palmer, enumerated as S. R. Palmer, appears in Towanda Twp. in 1850 living next to Norman Palmer, age 35.99 Norman Palmer, b. ca. 1815, is therefore the boy under ten in Stephen Palmer's household in 1820. The list of poor children usually included only children under twelve, so Norman was too old to appear on the 1828 list. Thus, the family of Stephen Palmer, son of Jareb, is accounted for.

Stephen, son of David Palmer, and Stephen, son of Jareb Palmer, are frequently confused. The two were almost the same age, both belonged to the Baptist church, and because Stephen (Jareb) died so young, he left few records behind. The two men seldom appear in records simultaneously. The 1820 federal census, Stephen (David) in Sullivan Twp., Tioga Co., PA,65 and Stephen (Jareb) in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA,1 is the one instance that effectively differentiates the two men. The family patterns shown by these two records differ significantly. Stephen (David) was the head of a family that included two boys and four girls; Stephen (Jareb) headed a family of four children, one boy and three girls.

Harty White was born circa 1795 the daughter of Caleb and Chloe (Hamilton) White in VT.99,5,27 She married (2) Nathaniel Hickok 25 August 1830 in Canton, Bradford Co., PA, marriage performed by Justice Asa Pratt.27 She married (3) James H. Ross circa 1845.27,99 She died before 27 June 1860 as she was not enumerated in the federal census of that date with her husband, probably in Granville Twp., Bradford Co., PA. She was buried in Granville Center Cemetery, Granville Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4

Harty, wife of Stephen Palmer, was first named as the mother of four "poor children" in the 1828 Canton Twp. tax list.5 Her name does not appear in the 1830 federal census as head of household; however, Harty's name was unusual enough to warrant a given name search of Bradford County households in 1850. The only feasible one, "Hartey Ross", appears in the James H. Ross household in Granville Twp. This woman is 55 years old and was born in Vermont.99 This household also included a sixteen-year-old girl named Esther Hicock. James H. Ross's 1840 household did not fit the expected pattern, but there was a "Harty Hicok" household in Granville Twp. that did.9 Heverly provided the final link in the chain, recording the 1830 marriage of Nathaniel Hickok to "Mrs. Palmer" in Canton.27 Harty's maiden name and parentage also comes from Heverly. Among the children of Caleb White and Chloe Hamilton, is "Artemisia (or 'Harty') [married] to James H. Ross."27

Harty (White) (Palmer) (Hickok) Ross does not appear in the 1860 federal census of Bradford County. Her husband James Ross is enumerated with a Mersa, or Mercy, Ross, probably his wife, in both the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Granville Twp. Harty is probably buried in Granville Center Cemetery under a tombstone inscribed only "Autie Ross."

Known children of Stephen2 Palmer and Harty White were as follows:

  • 83. i. Norman3 Palmer, born circa 1814 PA; married Sarah Dobbins.
  • ii. Chloe Palmer was born circa 1817 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.5
It's possible that Chloe Palmer, daughter of Stephen, is identical to Chloe, wife of Richard Hagar. This couple is enumerated in Granville Twp. from 1850 through at least 1870. They reside next to James H. Ross, Chloe Palmer's stepfather, in 1870. However, Chloe's census ages are inconsistent and so this identity is tentative only.
  • iii. Loisa Palmer was born circa 1818 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.5
  • iv. Dorinda Palmer was born circa 1820 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.5
  • 84. v. Stephen R. Palmer, born August 1822 Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA; married Alice (--?--); married Anna E. (--?--).

     77. Russell2 Palmer (Jareb1) was born 19 March 1791 in Rutland, Rutland Co., VT;26,104 married Sylvia Case, daughter of Reuben Case and Experience Nichols, 1 March 1814 in Alba, Bradford Co., PA;115,26,107 he died 6 March 1859 in Le Roy, Bradford Co., PA;107,104 buried in LeRoy Cemetery, Le Roy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4,104

Sylvia Case was born 18 April 1795 in Hebron, Washington Co., NY.37,26,107,28,104 She died 23 November 1879 in Le Roy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.107,109,104 She was buried in LeRoy Cemetery, Le Roy Twp., Bradford Co., PA.107,104

Family group sheet A164153 of Lydia Case (Palmer) in the E. E. Case manuscript contains information compiled from letter no. 1535, December 1907, of Dr. S. E. Palmer. Reuben Case's third child was not Lydia, but Sylvia. Either this was an error on the part of Leonard Case or it was a misreading by Erastus Case. The handwritten words "Sylvia" and "Lydia" can be easily confused. This error in relationship may help in the analysis of Erastus Case's manuscript. First, Stephen E. Palmer was the son of Anson and Mary (Barnes) Palmer, grandson of Stephen and Lydia (Case) Palmer. The information he provided on this misassigned group sheet consists of his grandparents' names, the name of his grandfather's second wife, his parents and his father's years of birth and death, and the names of the aunts and uncles he was probably familiar with. Lydia's birth date on this sheet, 18 April 1795, was the only complete date present and was probably added by Erastus Case from the information on the Reuben Case family. A complete analysis of family A164153 of Lydia Case (Palmer) is presented in the discussion of her family.

The information on Sylvia Case found in the papers of F. Marshall Case is written on a letterhead page dated 26 September 1986. Although this predates The Settler article on the Palmer family written by Gertrude Palmer Kelley,109 the information duplicates that found in the article and may be a result of a conversation with Mrs. Kelley, Sylvia's great-granddaughter. This page gives Sylvia's place and year of birth, her parentage, the date of her marriage to Russel Palmer, date of death, and burial in Leroy Cemetery. It repeats Mrs. Kelley's statement that Experience (Nichols) Case, Sylvia's mother, was a Quaker. The page also includes the name Gertrude Palmer Kelley, her date of birth, and minimal information on her life.107

Known children of Russell2 Palmer and Sylvia Case were as follows:

  • 85. i. Emeline3 Palmer, born 21 August 1815 Canton, Bradford Co., PA; married George P. Freeman.

Timothy R. Palmer enlisted as a private in Company K, 2nd Regiment Kansas Cavalry, 5 April 1862 in Shawnee, Kansas, for a three-year term, and he mustered-in the same day at Camp Blair. His name appears on the company muster rolls from this date through that of November-December 1864, with the exception of a missing roll, that dated July-August 1864. In June 1862, he was on daily duty in charge of the extra company horses. He was absent on detached service several times in 1863: escort duty by order of the Regimental Commander since 26 February 1863; messenger since 27 March 1863; escort duty since 28 May 1863; escort duty since 22 October 1863. His detachment was mustered 26 December 1863 at Ft. Smith, Arkansas by Major Weed, by which date he had been promoted to the rank of Wagoner. Palmer was part of a party despatched to Ft. Smith 26 May 1864, by order of Col. Cloud. The November-December 1864 roll reports him "Missing in action at Battle of Cow Creek C.N. [probably Canyon] Nov 1" 1864. Supposed to have been killed by Bushwhackers."117

     80. Louise2 Palmer (Jareb1) was born circa 1798 in VT;109,126,25 married Joel Rennells 12 January 1819 in Troy Twp., Bradford Co., PA;68 she died 17 April 1886 in Grattan Twp., Kent Co., MI;127 buried in Alton Cemetery, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., MI.127

I have found no direct contemporary evidence that confirms the identity of Louise, wife of Joel Rennells, and Louise, daughter of Jareb Palmer. Unfortunately, Louise Rennells's mother's pension application contained no information on her maiden name or date and place of marriage. Indirect evidence does support the identity. Joel Rennells and his young family are enumerated immediately preceding the families of Stephen and Russell Palmer, Laura's brothers, in Troy Twp. in 1820.113 By 1830, Stephen Palmer was dead, but Joel and Russell are still enumerated together, still in Troy Twp.19 Louise Rennells, like Louise Palmer, was born in Vermont. Her birth year, circa 1798, is consistent with the Jareb Palmer family picture. Her children, Laura and Stephen, were both born in Pennsylvania, placing Louise Rennells in Pennsylvania from at least 1824 through about 1831. Son Joel's volunteer enlistment paper narrows that location further to Bradford County, Pennsylvania, and extends their residence there through his birth in 1834. No evidence has been found to dispute the identity, but no evidence has been found to confirm it, either. I will leave this proof for other researchers closer to the problem.

Joel Rennells was born 1794 in VT.1,126,127 He died before 2 June 1870 because Louise appears to be a widow by that date, probably in Grattan Twp., Kent Co., MI.127 He was buried in Alton Cemetery, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., MI.127

The surname "Rennells" can be spelled in a surprisingly large number of ways. Joel Rennells and son Stephen appear in census records with surnames spelled "Rennells" and "Reynolds". The former spelling is used here as this is the spelling used when their names were signed.

Children. Unfortunately, I have not located the family in either 1840 or 1850 federal censuses, so the listing of children is incomplete. At least two daughters, one listed as under ten in the 1820 census and age 10 to 20 in 1830 and the other under five years of age in 1830, are unknown. Daughter Laura is probably the daughter age 5 to 10 who appears in 1830. Son Stephen is identified through census records; son Joel Jr. through his mother's pension application based on Joel's Civil War service. Joel's age is not given in this pension application file, but his volunteer enlistment paper states that he was 28 years 2 months of age in August 1862, placing his birth about June 1834. A third son may exist. In a 19 April 1863 letter to his parents, Joel Jr. says, "I think I will send two Small books and a watch chane to Lurranna and pin to John."128 Laura, Joel's sister, was also known as Luranna;129 John may be a brother not yet located in other records. Buried in Alton Cemetery, like most of the Joel Rennells family, is an Ella Inez Rennells.127 The only date given for her is 1867, probably a date of death. Ella may be a daughter of Joel, or perhaps, a granddaughter.

Known children of Louise2 Palmer and Joel Rennells were as follows:

  • 100. i. Laura A.3 Rennells, born April 1824 PA; married Ephraim F. Mills; divorced Ephraim F. Mills.
  • 101. ii. Stephen Rennells, born November 1830 PA; married Mary A. (--?--).
  • iii. Joel Rennells Jr. was born June 1834 in Bradford Co., PA;130 he died 8 July 1864 at the Asylum General Hospital in Knoxville, TN;128 buried in Knoxville National Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.41,131
Joel Rennells enlisted 12 Aug 1862 in Grattan Twp. as a private in Company B, 25th Regiment Michigan Volunteers, for the period of three years or during the war.128 Several of his letters home to his parents are part of his mother's pension application file at the National Archives. Most of those letters talk of his experiences on guard duty, but one is more reflective and reveals a sensitive nature and good command of language.
Camp Eureka 18 miles North East of Knoxville Tennisee. . . Dec 23rd A.D. 1863. Dear Father & Mother, I scarcely know what to write to day but will try & give you a little discription of the way an army leavs the Country after passing through it I have heard the people in Mich. say what a dreadful thing this war is how many men it is taking out of the Country & what an National debt it is bringing on us all this is verry true & is bad enough but after all they scarcely know there is war in the country nor can they realise it till they have seen the devastation made by the army. Just imagine if you can an army passing through your quiet settlement your fences burnt your hogs & sheepe killed your chickens all stale & perhaps your pork barrel emtied of its contents your corn & hay is taken to supply the army & maby some rude soldier has stolen some of your bed cloths or any thing else he can get a hold of your growing crops trampled in to the ground. I say when you can imagine this you have some ideas of the war. This is not imagination but is what I see all most evry day ad to this the citizen driven from his home perhaps his house burnt you pass a long till you come to the battle field as you approach you hear the deepe mouthed cannon sending forth its iron hale on its message of death then you meete the litter taking of the wounded perhaps the ocupant of the litter has a leg or an arm shattered which will make him a cripple for life or maby the leden message has touched the tender strings of the hart then approach the combattance. See them engaged in the deadly strife hear them cursing one other then again after the battle is over viset the field see the bloody [----] forms lying on the ground then go to the grave yard. See the new made graves with aboard at the head with the name of the ocupant Comp Reg &c. then viset the Hospital see the wounded when you have seen all this you have some ideas of the works of war but this is the dark side of the picture it is not evry day a sene like the last occurs enough on that subject well Sage has not started yet & dos not know when he will go I may have a chance to write some more I think you will have reading in this if I do not get to write any more. write often from Joel.128
Joel Rennells was admitted to Asylum General Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee, 1 July 1864 with "Typho-malarial fever, with Diarrhoea." He died 8 July 1864 of "Typho-malarial fever"128 and was buried in the National Cemetery in Knoxville.131,128

     81. Nathan2 Palmer (Jareb1) was born 7 June 1800 in Rutland Co., VT;3,83,109,4,4 married (1) Matilda Griffin 1824 in PA;3,4,5 married (2) Elizabeth Gray 1862 in Tioga Co., PA;4,67 he died 19 April 1885 at his residence in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;4,67 buried in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4

The 1883 History of Tioga County, Pennsylvania contains a biography of Nathan Palmer, published while he was still living. Original records support most of the statements found in that biography. The article traces Nathan's movements from his birthplace in Rutland [probably Rutland Co.], Vermont, to Bradford Co., PA, with his family. This move is given an exact date - 6 May 1813. I doubt that an exact day would have been recorded, but the timing is consistent with the Jareb Palmer family's move to Pennsylvania. Nathan, son of Jareb Palmer, is taxed as a single freeman in Canton Twp. in 1822 and 1823. "Single freeman" is crossed off on his 1824 tax entry, providing corroboration for his 1824 marriage to Matilda Griffin. Nathan and his growing family are enumerated in Canton in 183019, but by 1840 he had moved his family just across the county line into neighboring Union Twp., Tioga County.21 This also supports the biography's 1837 date for this move. Nathan spent the rest of his life in Union Twp. He died 19 April 188567 and is buried in North Union Cemetery with his second wife, Elizabeth Gray.4

Children. Nathan Palmer was the father of a very large family. His biography names sixteen children, fourteen by his first wife and two by his second. This list would benefit by more careful use of the comma. A son called Lafayette Heber is actually two boys, Lafayette and Heber, giving rise to the possibility of seventeen children. Census records, cemetery records, and Nathan Palmer's 2 May 1884 will document the following children. His will names these twelve children: son Ulysses G. Palmer and daughter Jessie F. Palmer, deceased daughter Emily Denmark, sons James M., Jacob, Nathan, and Heber; daughters Sarissa, wife of Abram Kniffin, Louisa, wife of E. Borroughs, Anna, wife of R. T. Thomas; sons David and Joseph B.67 Although there is a marker in North Union Cemetery for Nathan's first wife Matilda, she is probably buried under an older stone in Canton's Main Street Cemetery. Next to her are three small stones marking the burials of three sons: Lafayette, who died in 1834, Russell, who died in 1845, and a third boy whose name was too worn to read and who died in 1844.132 Daughter Charlotte died in 1883. Her name is inscribed on her father's stone in North Union Cemetery. She also appears in her sister Sarissa's household in the 1880 federal census enumeration as Lottie Snook, a married woman 47 years old.25 Sixteen children are verified by direct evidence in these records. Only one child named in Nathan's biography has not been found: daughter Maria. One possible answer is another misplaced comma. The list of children begins "James M., Sarissa, Maria, Jacob, . . . ." Perhaps daughter Sarissa M. was actually Sarissa Maria. The 1830 census enumeration, however, includes two young girls under five. One of these is Sarissa, born 1827. The other may be Maria, a daughter who died before 1840 and whose burial has not been found. (See Nathan (son of Jareb) Palmer census table).

Nathan, son of David Palmer, and Nathan, son of Jareb Palmer, are separated in age by about six years, a circumstance that allows records of the two men to be confused. It's always easy to assume that an individual of the right name and right age, living in the (almost) right area at the right time, is the person of interest. Only one Nathan Palmer appears as head of household in this region in the 1830 federal census. That man resides in Canton Twp., not the usual location for the descendants of David Palmer. Given the fact that Nathan, son of Jareb Palmer, is living and paying taxes in Canton Twp. at the time, it's more reasonable to assume that the Nathan Palmer, 1830 head of household, is the son of Jareb, not the son of David as some researchers assume. This 1830 family is consistent with that of Nathan, son of Jareb, so there is no reason to assign this census to another man.

Where is Nathan, son of David Palmer, a man with a wife, one son and two daughters, in 1830? Land records suggest that he should be found in Columbia Twp., but his name doesn't appear there, nor does it appear in neighboring Tioga Co. or in Harmony, NY. Several of Nathan's neighbors gleaned from land records are missing from this census, as well, so perhaps he was omitted. Columbia Twp. tax lists should be examined to verify Nathan's residence at this time. Confusion ends by 1840 when both men appear, with their different families, in separate census enumerations.

Matilda Griffin was born 24 January 1806 in PA.3,132 She died 7 September 1858 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.132 She was buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.132

Known children of Nathan2 Palmer and Matilda Griffin were as follows:

  • 102. i. James Monroe3 Palmer, born 4 January 1825 PA; married Jane Taylor.
  • ii. Sarissa M. Palmer was born 1826 in PA;3,83,4 married Abram Kniffen say 1865;4 she died 1900 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;4 buried in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4
  • iii. Maria Palmer was born say 1827.
  • 103. iv. Jareb Palmer, born 29 February 1828 Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA; married Elizabeth (--?--); divorced Elizabeth (--?--).
  • 104. v. Nathan Palmer Jr., born circa 1829 PA; married Rachel E. McMurray.
  • vi. Lafayette Palmer was born 18 February 1831 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;132 he died 26 April 1834 possibly in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;132 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.132
  • vii. Charlotte Palmer was born 1832;4,4 she died 1883 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;4 buried in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4
Charlotte Palmer appears in the 1880 federal census of Union Township in the household of her brother-in-law, Abram Kniffen. She is called Charlotte Snook and is married at the time. Her husband is not yet known. Charlotte died in 1883, probably without leaving any surviving children. She is not named in her father's 2 May 1884 will, nor are any children of hers mentioned.
  • 105. viii. Eber Palmer, born 24 June 1834 Canton, Bradford Co., PA; married Lydia Elvira Denney.
  • ix. Louisa Palmer was born circa 1836 in PA;3 married Egleston Burroughs say 1860.67
  • x. Emily Palmer was born circa 1839 in PA;3,83 married Nathan S. Denmark circa 1858;83,4 she died 24 March 1870 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;4 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.4
  • xi. Anna Palmer was born circa 1841 in PA;3,20 married Royal Thomas say 1865.67
  • xii. Seth G. Palmer was born 22 July 1843 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;132 he died 9 August 1844 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;132 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.132
The name on the top of the tombstone marking this Palmer boy's grave is illegible. Nathan's children, as listed in the Munsell History of Tioga County include a Seth G. Palmer between Anna and Russell. If the order is accurate, this unknown son would be Seth G. Palmer.4
  • xiii. Russell Palmer was born 16 February 1845 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;132 he died 16 February 1845 probably in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;132 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.132
  • xiv. Joseph B. Palmer was born circa 1846 in PA.3,83
Joseph was part of his father's household in 1850 and 1860, but seems to disappear after that time. He was a resident of Jenny Lind, Sebastian Co., Arkansas, in 1897, and is one of the three brothers named by Jareb Palmer in an 1895 deposition.133 Unfortunately, I have learned nothing further about this man.
  • xv. David Palmer was born circa 1848 in PA.3,83
Like brothers Jareb and Eber, David Palmer enlisted during the Civil War, but he joined the regular army, Company H, 3rd Battalion, 15th U.S. Infantry, in April 1865, less than a week before the assassination of President Lincoln. He served his full term of three years and after his discharge, apparently returned to Pennsylvania. Around 1890, David apparently moved to Jenny Lind, Sebastian Co., Arkansas, visiting brother Jareb Palmer in Minnesota, on the way. He was still living in Jenny Lind in 1897 when he provided a deposition for his brother's pension application.133 I have no further information on David at this time.

Elizabeth Gray was born circa 1835 in NY.25 She died 1904 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4 She was buried in North Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4

Known children of Nathan2 Palmer and Elizabeth Gray were as follows:

  • i. Ulysses Grant3 Palmer was born 1863 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;134 married Carrie Jennings say 1885;134 he died 1941 possibly in Bradford Co., PA;134 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.134
  • ii. Jessie Fremont Palmer was born 12 December 1867 in Union Twp., Tioga Co., PA;25,134 married Lloyd C. Bullard circa 1890;134 she died 27 April 1896 possibly in Bradford Co., PA;134 buried in Main Street Cemetery, Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.134

     82. David2 Palmer (Jareb1) was born circa 1806 in VT;109,57,99,57 married (1) Clarinda (--?--) circa 1827;101,99,5 married (2) Betsey Jackson say 1862; he died 7 March 1876 "at or about 3½ Oclock PM" in Alba Boro, Bradford Co., PA.84

Clarinda (--?--) was born 18 October 1807 in PA.99,101 She died 11 March 1859 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA.101 She was buried in Alba Cemetery, Alba, Bradford Co., PA.101

Clarinda, first wife of David Palmer, is identified as Clarinda Smith, daughter of Jeremiah Smith of Alba, Pennsylvania, in a genealogy of the Gray family written by Orlando Gray Palmer and Anna Gray Bemis Cutler in 1929.135 Despite Mr. Palmer's credentials, this work provides no documentation and so this identification needs further study.

Known children of David2 Palmer and Clarinda (--?--) were as follows:

  • 106. i. Columbus3 Palmer, born circa 1828 Bradford Co., PA; married Lydia M. (--?--).
  • ii. Bolivar Palmer was born 12 March 1829 in Bradford Co., PA;99,101 married Terresa (--?--) say 1849;99 he died 23 November 1851 probably in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;101 buried in Alba Cemetery, Alba, Bradford Co., PA.101

  • viii. David Palmer was born April 1846 in Bradford Co., PA;99,101 he died 16 October 1850 in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;101 buried in Alba Cemetery, Alba, Bradford Co., PA.101

Betsey Jackson was born circa 1825 in VT.57,25

It's very likely that the Betsy Jackson, age 31, born in Vermont, living in David Palmer's household in 1860 is the same Betsey who became his second wife and bore him three more children; however, I have no direct evidence to support this. She may have been married prior to her marriage to Palmer, so Jackson may not have been her maiden name. All census information is consistent in stating her birthplace as Vermont, but the 1860 census enumeration yields a birth year of 1829 (age 31) as opposed to the circa 1825 date derived from the 1870 and 1880 enumerations.

Known children of David2 Palmer and Betsey Jackson were as follows:

  • i. Hiram J.3 Palmer was born circa 1863 in Alba, Bradford Co., PA.57,25
  • ii. Della M. Palmer was born circa 1865 in Alba, Bradford Co., PA.57
  • iii. Mary E. Palmer was born circa 1868 in Alba, Bradford Co., PA.57
