     36. Stillman3 Keyes (Hannah2Palmer, David1) was born circa 1813 probably in Columbia Twp., Bradford Co., PA;54 married Eliza (--?--) circa 1837.52

     Eliza (--?--) was born circa 1816 in NY.54

     Eliza, wife of Stillman Keyes, was first identified as a daughter of David and Eunice Palmer on the basis of an indenture in which she and her husband grant an undivided one-ninth share in land once owned by Palmer.52 However, when the couple was located in the 1850 federal census of Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, it became evident that she was too young to be their daughter. I can think of two possible interpretations of the evidence. First, Eliza was the only surviving child of a deceased Palmer heir, i.e. a grandchild of David and Eunice. Second, Eliza and Stillman Keyes purchased this share from the ninth Palmer heir in a deed either unrecorded or undiscovered. Other theories are welcome.

     43. Delilah3 Palmer (Stephen2, David1) was born 12 November 1818 in Sullivan, Tioga Co., PA;37 married William Provin say 1839;37 she died 16 February 1842 probably in Sullivan Twp., Tioga Co., PA;37,63 buried in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Twp., Tioga Co., PA.63

     Delilah (Palmer) Provin died at the young age of 23 and is buried in King Hill Cemetery in Sullivan Twp. Buried next to her is her young daughter, Lucy Jane, who died only a few months after her mother at the age of one year eight months.63 Her husband, William Provin, who appears as head of household in Sullivan Twp. in 1840, disappears from the records of Tioga County after the death of this daughter. Stephen Palmer's 1866 will names all his then-living children, but makes no mention of any grandchildren. I assumed that Delilah (Palmer) Provin's only descendant was the young girl buried with her. However, Stephen E. Palmer, Delilah's nephew, included the information that William Provin resided in Westfield, Massachusetts, in his 1907 response to Erastus Ely Case.37 Following up this clue uncovered a second child, William, whose February 1842 birth date suggests that his mother died in childbirth. It's nice to know that Delilah's line did not end with the two graves in King Hill Cemetery.

     William Provin was born circa 1817 in MA.37,75,76,77 He married (2) Abby Sophia Weller 26 August 1847 in Granby, Hartford Co., CT, marriage performed by Peter I. Jewett, J.P.78 He died after 23 June 1870 probably in Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.

     Delight Smith, age 77, born in Connecticut, resides with this family in 1860. It gives credence to Helen's maiden name being Smith. Living next to the family in 1850 is the household of Chas. N. Smith, age 27, farmer, $150, also born in Connecticut.55 He is probably her brother.60

     Charles E. Palmer enlisted on 25 October 1862, in Harrisburg, PA, as a private in Company C, 171st Pennsylvania Militia Volunteers, for a period of nine months.85 He was discharged from military service on 8 August 1863 Harrisburg, PA.85

     Charles E. Palmer entered the service in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 25 October 1862, as a private in Company C, 171st Pennsylvania Militia Volunteers, for a period of nine months. Captain C. E. Wood, commander of Company C, stated that "Charles E. Palmer was prostrated with fever and chronic diarrhoea at Washington, N.C. about the first of June 1863, and from thence he was conveyed to Harrisburg, Pa. at which place he was lying in the Hospital, helpless, with the chronic diarrhoea, at the time of our discharge from the service". This discharge took place 8 August 1863. Charles was carried home to Sullivan Township, but never recovered. He died 13 September 1863 of "chronic diarrhea contracted in military service." He was buried in King Hill Cemetery.

     In a 16 May 2002 email message to the Tri-Counties Genealogy web site, Wayne North identified his wife's ancestress as Cynthia Palmer Mayhew, the daughter of Nathan and Phoebe (Rexford) Palmer.4 Assuming Mr. North's identification is correct, then Cynthia is probably the wife of Charles Mayhew and appears with him in the 1850 and 1860 census enumerations of Dodge County and Columbia County, Wisconsin, respectively.72,86 Supporting this identification is her sister Eunice's obituary which stated that the Palmer family lived in Portland, Wisconsin, in 1847. Cynthia (Palmer) Mayhew was probably born about 1828. Although both these census state that she was born in New York, it's more likely that her parents were still in Columbia Twp., Bradford Co., PA, at this time.

     Although Cynthia's sons Charles and Frank appear in Windsor, Dane County, WI, in 1870, I have not found Cynthia or Charles Mayhew. It's possible that Charles, who was considerably older than she, had died by this date, and it's likely that she remarried. Her son Charles appears as head of household in Douglas, Marquette Co., WI, in 1880, and enumerated just before his household is the home of Nelson S. Pomroy, age 70, whose wife, Cintha, is 52 years old, born in PA to parents also born in PA.25 Nelson and Cynthia reside in Douglas in 1870, although Cynthia is only 32 years old. Nelson was enumerated in Windsor, Dane Co., WI, in 1860, with his first wife, Harriet.87 Perhaps the widowed Cynthia met Nelson Pomeroy while visiting her sister Eunice. Although further research is necessary to confirm these hypotheses, it is a logical scenario.

     Charles Mayhew was born circa 1804 in MA.72

     54. Eunice3 Palmer (Nathan2, David1) was born 7 May 1829 in Columbia Twp., Bradford Co., PA;4,68,88 married Daniel Storer 1847 in Portland, Dodge Co., WI;69,68,88 she died 17 May 1908 in Windsor Twp., Dane Co., WI;4 buried 24 May 1908 in Taylor Cemetery, Bristol, Dodge Co., WI.68,4

     Daniel Storer was born June 1825 in ME.25,69,88

     55. Ransom3 Palmer (Nathan2, David1) was born circa 1838 in Chautauqua Co., NY;89 married Fanny Bragg 16 July 1861 in Glenwood, Mills Co., IA.71

     Fanny Bragg , the daughter of Jonas Bragg, was born circa 1843 in IL.89,89

     Known children of Ransom3 Palmer and Fanny Bragg were as follows:

  • i. Luther4 Palmer was born circa 1864 in Saybrook, McLean Co., IL.89
  • ii. Earl Palmer was born 16 December 1877 in Saybrook, McLean Co., IL.71,25

     56. Charles3 Palmer (Nathan2, David1) was born 25 December 1839 in Chautauqua Co., NY;58,70,70,90 married Mary E. Ball 25 December 1866 in Saybrook, McLean Co., IL;70,70,71 he died 21 January 1912 in Joplin, Newton Co., MO;70,70 buried 22 January 1912 in Jasper Co., MO.70

     Charles Palmer enlisted on 26 February 1862, in Madison, WI, in Co. G, 6th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.70 He was discharged from military service on 25 February 1865 Hatcher's Run, VA.70

     Mary E. Ball , the daughter of Snowden and America Ball, was born circa 1846 in IL.70,70,89 She died 20 January 1919 in Saginaw, MO.70
