Descendants of Abraham Palmer10. Joel M.3 Palmer (George2, Abraham1) was born circa 1823 possibly in Canton Twp., Bradford Co., PA;3,18,20 married (1) Harriet (--?--) say 1848;3 married (2) Clarissa (--?--) say 1859.18,25 Thanks to a quirky entry in the 1870, Joel Palmer's parentage is not in doubt. He is enumerated next to George and Sylvia Palmer in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses; but in 1870, the older couple lives with him. Next to Sylvia's name under "Occupation" is the comment "living with son."20 It's always nice to find an unexpected piece of direct evidence. It's not easy to state conclusively that the Harriet Palmer who appears in Joel's household in 18503 and the Clarissa Palmer who appears as his wife throughout the rest of his life are two different women.18,20 Both were born in New York and are almost the same age, Harriet born circa 1829, and Clarissa born circa 1830. However, the large gap of fourteen years between the birth of Chloe and that of John, supports the idea that the two children were born by two different women. Harriet (--?--) was born circa 1829 in NY.3 Known children of Joel M.3 Palmer and Harriet (--?--) were: Clarissa (--?--) was born circa 1830 in NY.20,18,25 Known children of Joel M.3 Palmer and Clarissa (--?--) were as follows:

13. Evaline3 Palmer (George2, Abraham1) was born circa 1847 in PA;3,20,18,30 married (1) Jesse B. Losey circa 1866; married (2) Samuel Beaty circa 1872.30 The 1880 federal census enumeration of the Samuel Beaty household included his widowed mother-in-law, Sylva Parmer, age 74. Samuel's wife was 33-year-old Evaline Beaty, her age an exact match for Evaline Palmer, daughter of George and Sylvia Palmer. Two stepchildren also lived in the household, Edward Mosher, age 16, and Estella Locey, age 13.30 Although Edward's parents have not been identified, Estella Locey appears in 1870 as the three-year old daughter of Jesse B. and Evelin Locey.20 Evaline is 23 years old, obviously the same woman later found married to Samuel Beaty, a man more than twice her age. Her first marriage ended in divorce some time between the enumeration of this 1870 census and the birth of daughter Hattie Beaty circa 1873. Her ex-husband, Jesse Locey was married in 1880 to May, a woman ten years his junior who was born in Nebraska. By 1900, however, Jesse was married to Evaline's first cousin, Arvesta Palmer, an interesting sequence of events.29 Jesse B. Losey was born November 1845 in PA.29,20 He married (3) Arvesta Palmer, daughter of Griffin Palmer and Amy Losey, circa 1882.4,29 Known children of Evaline3 Palmer and Jesse B. They removed to Troupsburgh in Steuben Co., NY, shortly thereafter, as their first child, George, was born in NY in 1862. The family appears in the 1870 federal census enumeration of Troupsburgh, but they moved to Winfield Twp. in Montcalm Co., MI, sometime between the Feb 1876 birth of son Ira and the 4 June 1880 federal census enumeration. Ada was the mother of ten children, eight of them living in 1900. Nine of the children are known. Given the family birth pattern, the unknown tenth child may have been born about 1878 or after the 1880 birth of twins Nelson and Nellie. Mary, Ada's oldest daughter, is probably the other child deceased by 1900. Living with Ada and William in 1900 are three grandchildren, all surnamed Jack and of an age to have been children of Mary. William Carr was born November 1833 in PA.40,43,44 Known children of Ada C.3 Palmer and William Carr were as follows:

"I would state that the time place and circumstances as to loss of right arm are as follows: Edging Board in Henry Moors saw mill in Elk Co. The family has not been located in the 1880 federal census enumeration, yet. Known children of Florena3 Palmer and Ashley Hackett were as follows:
22. Arvesta3 Palmer (Griffin2, Abraham1) was born 12 April 1856 in Middlebury, Tioga Co., PA;32,4 married Jesse B. Losey circa 1882;4,29 she died 1926;4 buried in Middlebury Union Cemetery, Middlebury Twp., Tioga Co., PA.4 Arvesta Palmer was only eight years old when her father, Griffin Palmer, was killed in battle in Spotsylvania, VA. She married Jesse Losey, a man who had been married at least twice before, in 1882. Jesse's first marriage, to Arvesta's first cousin, Evaline Palmer, ended in divorce. Arvesta and Jesse had at least three children, a son and two daughters enumerated in the family home in the 1900 federal census. This census, however, states that Arvesta was the mother of five children, all living.29 Arvesta is widowed in 1910. Her daughter Effie lives with her and she rents a house from Fannie Churchill. This census shows her as the mother of four children, but the number living is smeared and illegible.49 The missing child, or children, is unknown at this time. It's possible, though, that one of them may be Willie Shaw, her mother's adopted son living in the Amy Palmer home in 1880. Jesse B. Losey was born November 1845 in PA.29,20 He married (1) Evaline Palmer, daughter of George Palmer and Sylvia White, circa 1866. Known children of Arvesta3 Palmer and Jesse B. Losey were as follows: |
