Barnes Families in Norfolk, England
A Preliminary Study

|
This area is a preliminary study of the Barnes families in Norfolk, England, predominantly those living in the area of Langham Parish. Data on the UK branches of this family came from the Langham parish registers and archbishop's transcripts; the Saxlingham parish archbishop's transcript; and the 1841 and 1851 censuses of the area. Given the common surnames and the large number of James, John, Thomas, Mary, and Elizabeth Barneses in the area, identification is tentative at the moment for many of these individuals. At least three contemporary Barnes members have been found born circa 1760: Jane of Cley-near-the-Sea, William of Morston, and Robert of Langham and Saxlingham. Research has concentrated on the descendants of Robert, but at least one child of William has been identified. Mark of Langham, a contemporary of brothers Richard and John, appears in the next generation. His parents have not been identified. Although geography suggests a relationship to the two brothers, his literacy implies a different parentage. Also unidentified is Susan(nah) Barnes, wife of Henry Claxton, also of Langham. Information on the site includes descendant charts as well as individual narratives. Note that some of the hyperlinks found
in these narratives may not be active. They must be viewed from the main Barnes family area of the site; the link is
provided below. All source documentation is available from the author. Comments, corrections, and additional information are very welcome. |
