Generation Two

     2. Thomas2 Barnes (Richard1); born 12 September 1810 in Langham, Norfolk, England; baptized 16 September 1810 in Langham, Norfolk, England, privately by John Burrell, Curate; married Anne Shorten circa 1835 in Norfolk, England; buried 30 September 1894 in Langham, Norfolk, England.

There was a second Thomas Barnes residing in Langham at this time. He was also married to an Anne, Anne Withers, who he married 4 November 1833. This Thomas was identified in the marriage register as a widower and is probably the Thomas Barnes, son of Robert Barnes, who had married Mary Dow with the consent of his father 12 October 1813. He appears as head of household in the census of June 1841 in Langham, Norfolk, England, with Anne Shorten, Mary Barnes, Elizabeth Barnes, and Amis Barnes.4 He appears as head of household in the census of 5 April 1851 in Langham, Norfolk, England.5 He appears as head of household in the census of 1891 in Langham, Norfolk, England.6

Anne Shorten was born circa 1810 in Langham, Norfolk, England. Anne Shorten appears as Ann Barns, age 33, in the census of June 1841, Langham, Norfolk, England, in the household of Thomas Barnes.

Known children of Thomas2 Barnes and Anne Shorten were as follows:

     3. Henry2 Barnes (Richard1); born 28 January 1813 in Langham, Norfolk, England; baptized 31 January 1813 in Langham Parish, Langham, Norfolk, England, . The baptism was performed by John Burrell, Curate; married Hannah Bone circa 1836; buried 30 July 1856 in Langham, Norfolk, England.

His occupation is listed as an agricultural laborer. His occupation is listed as a labourer.

The identity of Henry Barnes, son of Richard and Mary (Burton) Barnes, with Henry Barnes, husband of Hannah Bone, is not confirmed. In support of this identification is the similar age, no evidence of the death of Henry, son of Richard and Mary, and no evidence of the existence of two Henrys of similar age in any Langham parish register entry.

Although the marriage of Henry Barnes to Hannah Bone has not been found in the Langham Parish Register of Marriages to 1837, the family found in the 1851 census of Langham Parish matches the family structure of this couple delineated in the baptismal registers of the parish. In addition, residing in the same dwelling in 1851 is the widower Rudd Bone, age 63, probably Hannah's father. The marriage of Hannah Barnes and Isaac Lock, 15 November 1836, is witnessed by a Henry Barnes and Hannah Bone. Assuming this is the same couple, their marriage probably took place shortly thereafter. He appears as head of household in the census of 5 April 1851 in Langham, Norfolk, England, with Hannah Bone, Ann Barnes, James Barnes, William Barnes, Robert Barnes, Richard Barnes, and Mary Barnes.7

The burial register indicates that a Henry Barnes was buried 30 July 1856 at the age of 42 years. This corresponds with the birth date of this Henry Barnes, and therefore supports this identity, but does not confirm it.

Hannah Bone was born circa 1820 in Langham, Norfolk, England. She was buried on 8 August 1858 in Langham, Norfolk, England. She was also known as Anne Bone. Hannah Bone appears as Hannah Barnes, age 31, in the census of 5 April 1851, Langham, Norfolk, England, in the household of her husband Henry Barnes.

The burial record of Hannah Barnes in 1858 does not identify her as the wife of Henry Barnes, nor does it give her maiden name. However, her age at the time of death is given as 38 years, which corresponds well to Hannah (Bone) Barnes' birth year of 1820.

Known children of Henry2 Barnes and Hannah Bone were as follows:

     5. Ann2 Barnes (Richard1); born 3 September 1817 in Langham, Norfolk, England;8 baptized 7 September 1817 in Langham Parish, Langham, Norfolk, England, . The baptism was performed by John Burrell, Curate; married Robert Peck 17 March 1841 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT; she died 5 July 1851 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT;9 buried in Green Cemetery, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT.

The father of Ann's son Henry may never be known. The passage of the Poor Law Amendment Act in 1834 made it more difficult for an unwed mother to gain support for her child from its father. The mother was required to support her child until the child reached the age of sixteen. If she was unable to do so, she would be allowed to attempt to prove the child's parentage. If the father could be proven, that man was required to support the child until he or she reached the age of eight years. Otherwise, the child would be removed from the mother and placed in the poor house. Possibly, Henry's birth, which placed an additional financial burden on the Richard Barnes family, was the factor which precipitated the family's eventual removal to Danville, Vermont.

Ann Barnes emigrated circa June 1836 from England probably with her parents and sisters during the mass emigration period from Norfolk. Most of the Caledonia County residents who immigrated from England during this time appeared to have come through Canada. Although these families do not appear to have settled in close proximity, they do appear to have maintained close contact. Ann and two of her sisters, Elizabeth and Harriet, married native Englishmen.

Ann and her son Henry appear to be enumerated in her father's household in the 1840 census schedule of Danville, Ann as one of the two females 20-30 [sister Elizabeth would be the other], and Henry as the male under 5 years of age. The two appear in husband Robert Peck's household in the 1850 census schedule of Danville. Unlike her husband and parents, Ann, age 33, appears to be able to read and write. Her obituary appeared in the Danville North Star 12 July 1851.10

Ann died in the summer of 1851. No cause of death is listed on her death record, but her obituary speaks of "her protracted sickness." Her tombstone in Green Cemetery appears isolated. Although sister Elizabeth (Barnes) Palmer is buried only a short walk away, there are no stones near that of Ann. Her husband of ten years, Robert Peck, would marry two more times and would be buried 37 years later in the Pettengill Cemetery with his second wife, Sarah (Chamberlin) Peck.

Known children of Ann2 Barnes include:

Robert Peck was born 1817 in Buckingham, England, as calculated from his age at death. He married 30 May 1853 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT. He married. He died 11 October 1888 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, at the home of Mrs. Esther Porter; cause of death: disease of liver, widower, age 71 years. His occupation is listed as farmer. The Robert Peck family in the 1870 census is not really similar to the Robert Peck family of 1850 or 1860. Are there two separate families? He emigrated circa 1837 from England. He was head of household on the census of 1840 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT.11 He could not read or write in 1850. He appears as head of household in the census of 19 September 1850 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, with Ann Barnes and William Henry Peck.12 He appears as head of household in the census of 1 June 1860 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, with John Peck.13 He may be the person who appears as head of household in the census of 20 July 1870 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT,. Since this family group differs radically from that known to be the family of Robert Peck, either this entry is that of an entirely different family, or there was a copying error when the federal census was made.14 He appears as head of household in the census of 11 June 1880 in Peacham, Caledonia Co., VT.15 His obituary appeared in the St. Johnsbury Caledonian 25 October 1888.16

Known children of Ann2 Barnes and Robert Peck were:

     6. Elizabeth2 Barnes (Richard1); her birth was also listed as occurring June 1820 in England calculated from age at death; born 22 June 1820 in Langham, Norfolk, England; baptized 2 July 1820 in Langham Parish, Langham, Norfolk, England, . The baptism was performed by John Burrell, Curate; her birth was also listed as occurring 28 July 1820 in Langham, Norfolk, England; married Edward C. Palmer 23 March 1842 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT; she died 29 April 1854 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, Betsey wife of E. C. Palmer, age 33 years 10 months; buried in Green Cemetery, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT . The stone reads "Elisabeth// wife of Edward C. Palmer// d. 29 Apr 1854// ae 33y 10m."

She is probably one of the females age 20-30 enumerated in the household of Richard Barnes in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1840.3 She was also known as Betsey Palmer. Elizabeth Barnes appears in the census of 23 September 1850, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Edward C. Palmer.

Edward C. Palmer was born 1820 in England. His occupation is listed as farmer. He was head of household on the census of 1840 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT.17 He appears as head of household in the census of 23 September 1850 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, with Elizabeth Barnes, Mary Ann Palmer, and Flora Jane Palmer.18 He appears as a farm laborer in the Jacob [Waux?] household in the census of 18 June 1860 in Peacham, Caledonia Co., VT.19

Known children of Elizabeth2 Barnes and Edward C. Palmer all born Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, were as follows:

     7. Mary S.2 Barnes (Richard1); born between 1823 and 1824 in England; she died 10 August 1899 in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, age 75 years, cause of death: valvular disease of heart; buried in Green Cemetery, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT . Her tombstone reads "Mary Barnes died Aug. 10, 1899 Ae 75 yrs."

She was never married. She is probably the female age 15-20 enumerated in the household of Richard Barnes in Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1840.3 Mary S. Barnes appears in the census of 23 September 1850, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Richard Barnes. Her occupation is listed as washing woman 1860. Mary S. Barnes appears in the census of 5 June 1860, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Richard Barnes. Mary S. Barnes appears in the census of 18 July 1870, Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Richard Barnes.

Administration of the estate of Mary S. Barnes was granted to William Henry Peck on 24 August 1899 Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, . He appears to have maintained a close relationship with his mother's family, but may have drifted away from his stepfather.
