First Generation

1. John1 McVay,(1) son of John McVay, was born 16 Dec 1759.(2) He died 21 Feb 1826 in Morris Twp., Washington Co., PA, at 66 years of age.(3) His body was interred in Prosperity, Washington Co., PA, Prosperity Cemetery.(4)

He married Sarah Rude circa 1780. She was born 11 Aug 1763.(5) Sarah was the daughter of John Rude and Sarah ?. She died 27 Apr 1839 at 75 years of age.(6) Her body was interred in Prosperity, Washington Co., PA, Prosperity Cemetery.

He served in the military in Pennsylvania, 1780. The wartime service of John McVay in the American Revolution is claimed from two different sources. The first source ( Pennsylvania Archives, Series V , Vol. V, pp. 850-851), is cited by both Max McVay (letter to Martin Scott McVay of Princeton, NJ, dated 29 March 1982) and by Martin Scott McVay in his privately printed book, A Family Genealogy (1980). Under the heading, "County of Chester, Associators and Militia, East Bradford," and subheading "Return of The Militia Class D for 1780," are listed 109 men in total for the 1st through 8th Classes. The 14 men listed under Class 5th include a John McVay in "A Return of Classes of East Bradford Company by Peter Storde, Cap't." The second source ( Pennsylvania Archives, Series VI , Vol. 2, pp. 7, 8, 11-13, 217), lists him as Private, Captain John Miller's Company, 1st Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia, Col. Henry Enoch, Commander. This service was claimed as substantiating eligibility for DAR membership by Inez Roberts Sheppard of Parkersburg, WVA. I am inclined toward the second source and believe that this John McVay is my ancestor, especially since Leckey (see below) notes that the soldiers in the 1st Battalion were recruited in Washington County, where John McVay was residing at the time. From Max McVay: "Sarah's (John McVay's wife) maiden name is spelled both "Rood" and "Rude." She was the daughter of John and Sarah Rude...At some point, probably after 1781, John changed his name from McVaugh to McVay. This is substantiated by two documents. The first is an application, made to the Land Office of Pennsylvania for a warrant for 400 acres at a cost of 10 pounds for each 100 acres. The warrant was received in February, 1786, and was designated "Wolf Hollow." The original application was written on a plain piece of brown wrapping paper about 4" x 7" and is presently on file at the State Land Office in Harrisburg, PA. The second document is a deed or indenture recorded in Deed Book IV-488, Washington Co., PA, between John and Sarah McVaugh and a Richard Hathaway, all of Washington County, PA, under the terms of which John and Sarah received $1,000.00 for the sale of 274 acres of land. John signed the indenture "McVay," and Sarah made her mark. The deed was acknowledged as genuine by Ziba Cook, Jacob McVay, and Samuel Rude on December 2, 1805. (As John McVay's son, Jacob, was not yet 21 years old at this time, it is doubtful that he was a witness to the signing of this document. Perhaps this Jacob was a brother or other relative to John McVay.

"It is also unclear what relationship, if any, Samuel Rude may have had to Sarah Rood (or Rude) McVay.). Further, as Max McVay states in his letter of 29 March 1982, this document clearly states that he is the same John McVaugh who came with the original party from New Jersey and who patented the original claim for the original patent for 400 acres." (Max McVay, unpublished manuscript).

He was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Washington Co., PA.(7) He was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Washington Co., PA.(8) He was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Washington Co., PA.(9) His will was probated in Washington Co., PA, 24 Feb 1826. Summary of the Will of John McVay Resident of Morris Township. Funeral expenses and all debts to be paid. To my wife 1/3 of personal property. To sons Abraham, Samuel, Isaac 50 acres of land each. Notes and References

1Regarding the move to Washington County, Pennsylvania, Boyd Crumrine, in his History of Washington County, Pennsylvania (Evansville, IN: Unigraphic, 1975), notes that there was a migration of 20-30 families, mainly from Morris County, NJ, to Washington Co., PA, in the mid-1770's. They apparently gave their home the same name (Morris Township) as their New Jersey home. These pioneer families included the Lindleys (Demas Lindley and his brother-in-law, Jacob Cook) and the McVays, presumably including our John. It has not been determined which, if any, members of his family came with him; however, the company of Pennsylvania militia in which John served was formed near Fort Lindley in Washington County in 1782, and also claimed as members Edward, Benjamin, and Isaac McVay. Howard L. Leckey notes, in The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families (Knightstown, IN: The Bookmark, 1977, p. 459), that: "Crumrine says there was a migration of some twenty or thirty families, who left their homes in Morris County, New Jersey, in 1777, to come to North Tenmile, but that being the 'Bloody Year' were compelled to return over the mountains until the following season, when they came back to make permanent settlement. When the County of Washington was formed they gave the name of theirìè New Jersey home to the newly formed Amwell Township, and later to the two Morris Townships in Washington and Greene Counties. These pioneer families included the Gobles, Lindleys, Hathaways, Condits, McVays, some of the Rosses, Pettits, Wolvertons, etc., who settled about Fort Lindley, now the village of Prosperity."

93Obituary, Unionville Republican, November, 1915: "I. N. McVay was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, March 5, 1835. He died November 13, 1915. At his death he was 80 years old, 8 months, and 9 days. 'Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of corn cometh in its season.' Father McVay will be greatly missed from the community. He was a highly esteemed citizen, a man of noble bearing, he was a good neighbor and his death will be mourned by many, especially his children and immediate neighbors. "He was a member of the Baptist church, and there being no church of his choice in the neighborhood he never united with any other communion, but kept the faith in the same. Further evidence of this soul's worth, manly man, was shown by the large audience that gathered to pay their last respects to the old patriarch. He was laid to rest by the side of his companion, who preceded him about two years ago, there to wait the Resurrection morn. Peace to him." 219Excerpts from a letter written by Chance Dickson to the half sister of his mother [Virginia McVay Dickson], Flora Jane McVay, from St. James, MO, April 25, 1960: "As I have it from Dad there were either three or five Dickson brothers left Ireland when the Carolinas was being colonized to come to America. Probably to pay their passage they went to England and stayed a year. One of them died while in England and my great-grandfather married an English girl before coming across so you see I have a little English blood. I have never been able to learn my great-grandfather's given name, but he was wounded in some of the early wars, French and Indian or the Revolutionary. He had part of his thigh cut out with a saber or sword and had to walk with a cane or crutch the rest of his life. "Grandfather Nicholas Dickson was born in the year 1793 in one of the Carolinas and he had a brother William, the father of George W. Dickson over at Bethany. My great-grandfather moved with his family from Carolina to Ohio about 1803 or 1804 and settled in Ohio. I don't know just what part. (Uncle Robert was born in or near Dayton, Ohio.) "The War of 1812 coming up Nicholas was inducted in the U.S. forces and served during that war. If his name was not spelled Dickson at that time I do not see how he could have gotten a pension after it had spelled Dixon nor could Grandmother Dickson (Grandma Olive) have gotten a pension after his death. This seems to me fair proof that Grandfather Nicholas had not spelled his name Dixon. Another fact that weighs with me pretty heavily is that Grandfather Nicholas had three sons --- Dad, Uncle Robert, Elisha's father [Calvin Dickson], and another named William. William married a girl from a family that Granddad did not approve of and then went to Arkansas. He changed his name to Dixon and for his trouble grandfather cut him out of anything he had..Grandfather Dickson's brother moved from Ohio to Indiana and lived their some time. Father always said he married a woman who was sort of PRISSY or FIXIFIED and as Uncle William was a doctor, she might have been just a little bit ashamed of Grandfather Nicholas who was only a worker in the shipyards and decided that the name would look better or that Dickson was incorrect and she could probably have gotten to spelling the name Dixon as it seems a lot of Southerners do and as Ohio and Indiana are near Kentucky and Tennessee.. "Uncle William practiced as a doctor for several years after coming to Missouri as Father often told us he would make a trip back to Indiana to get the roots and herbs that he used to concoct his remedies. Sometimes he made the trip on foot but I imagine he hitched a ride whenever possible. "Of course Vesta's [my grandmother, Julia Vesta McVay Dickson] children would be more interested in Uncle William's side than in ours but I believe they will be interested in getting the name straight. I do not know how many children Uncle William raised besides George W. Dickson at Bethany but there were some that stayed in Indiana as I have a letter from another George W. Dickson, who called our George Uncle and it was from Indiana and written in 1885. "William Dickson was the father of George W. Dickson. George W. Dickson was the father of the following: Henry Dickson Charles Dickson (died in the Civil War) William Dickson John A. Dickson Jennie Coppock Mary Coppock "At least two other daughters, the mother of George Johnson and Eliza Burks. Another, the mother of Virgil Hodson, who none of us remember. Beatrice and John can easily get the family records from their grandfather William Dickson."
