1. August Johann1 Heise was born on Sunday, 15 August 1847 in Hanover, Liebenau, Germany, son of Ludwig Karl Heise and Bertha Margaret Rabba. He married Margaretha Ruppert, daughter of Joseph Ruppert and Katharina Weitzel, on 23 Feb 1868 at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Baltimore City, Maryland. The ceremony was conducted by the Reverend Martin Kratt.1 August died on 31 May 1910 at 2827 Walbrook Avenue in Baltimore City at age 62. .2 His death was a result of illness caused by mitral valve disease and pleural effusion.3 He was buried on 31 May 1910 in Lorraine Park Cemetery, Baltimore County, Maryland. August Johann Heise about 1870August earned his living primarily as part-owner and salesman in the family firm of  Heise & Bruns, Lumber Merchants. After the demise of Heise & Bruns in the early part of the 20th century, August joined with Frederick Bauernschmidt, a fellow German businessman in Baltimore who had established the American Brewery in Baltimore. Heise served as a collector for this firm.

In 1868, just after marriage, August and Margaretha Heise resided at 13 Gough Street in Baltimore City.5  From 1870 to 1871, this young family lived on Choptank near Pratt Street in Baltimore.6,7 From 1872 to 1875 the home address was 59 South Choptank Street.8 August and his growing family lived from 1876 to 1887 at 59 South Collington Street in Baltimore City which was the new name for Choptank Street.10,11
Between 1887 to 1888, the Heise's resided at 221 South Collington Street, Baltimore City, Maryland. Actually, this is again the same residence, the city simply re-numbered all of the houses in 1887. By 1888, shortly after the death of his wife, Heise moved to a much more upscale residence at 2223 Eutaw Place in Baltimore's Bolton Hill district near Druid Hill Park..14,15,16 He remained at this address for at least eleven years. By 1901, Heise had moved further south on Eutaw Place to number 11.19 Between 1902  and 1905 he moved from 509 West Saratoga Street,20 to318 North Paca Street.21,22 His final residence for the last five years of his life was at 2827 Walbrook Avenue.23
August has been found in at least two census enumerations. He appeared on the census of 1870 in Baltimore City. In 1880, the Heise family was located at 59 South Collington Street. The census taker made the following entry for the family: August Heise, white male aged 33 from Hanover; Margareth, wife, aged 29 from Maryland; Augusta, daughter aged 9 from Maryland; Katie, daughter aged 7 from Maryland; Rufus, son aged 3 from Maryland and Kate Zorbach, 13-year old niece from Maryland.12
