Descendants of Adolph H.T. Heise

Adolph H. T. Heise

ADOLPH H.T. HEISE was born November 28, 1850 in Bremen, Germany(1).  Although we haven’t found his immigration records yet, he probably came to the United States as a very young child, since newspaper articles state that his father came in 1852 and brought the rest of the family over immediately afterwards.  The death certificate indicates that Adolph had been a resident of Baltimore for 55 years.  Adolph grew up and became a barber.(1, 2)

Adolph married MARY (aka MARIA or MOLLIE) ELIZABETH WEICKER.(4)  She was born about May 18, 1854 in Maryland.  We determined her birth date from the census records and from her age at the time she died (aged 81 years, 6 months, 22 days).(5)

Adolph died on June 6, 1922 in Baltimore and Mary died on December 10, 1935.(1,5)  Adolph and Mary are both buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

Our search for Adolph and Mary took some interesting turns, especially on census records.

(If you click on the links in this paragraph, please use your "back button" to return).  In the 1880 Census soundex records he is listed as “Rudolph Heise” and as "Randolph Heise" on the 1880 Census CDs published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  The actual 1880 census copy shows "Rudolph Heise."  In the 1900 Census soundex records he is listed as “Adoulph E. Heise.”  His middle initials vary from “H.T.” to “E.” to “H.Y.” but his Last Will and Testament indicates the “H.T.” is correct.(3)  Mary has been found listed as Maria, Margaret and Amalia in various census and church records.  Her last name has been spelled both as Weicker and Weiger.(2,4)  Most recently, we have discovered that two of Adolph and Mary's children are buried in Baltimore Cemetery with members of the "Wicare" family, which may be a phonetic spelling of Mary's maiden name.

Mary and Adolph had several children:

LOUISA CATHARINA HEISE, was born about February 24, 1874, Baltimore, MD, USA.  She appears on the 1880 census, age 6.  Louisa married WALTER MILLER and to the best of our knowledge, so far, they had two daughters.  We don’t know their daughters’ names, but one could possibly be Ethel.

MARY ALLICE HEISE, was born December 02, 1875, in Baltimore, Maryland.  Mary Allice was known as Allice and is listed as such on the 1880 census, at the age of 4.  Mary Allice married THOMAS C. FORREST some time before 1900 (because they are listed together on the 1900 census, with their two children).  They were living with her parents at the time.  According to the census, Thomas was born about July 1875 in Maryland.(2a)

The children of Allice and Thomas Forrest listed in the 1900 Census are:
ROLAND E. FORREST, born about August 1897 in Maryland
THOMAS C. FORREST, born about July 1899 in Maryland
We have not yet found other children for this couple.

CARROLL HEISE, was born in December 1886 in Maryland(2a).   Carroll died at age 25 on July 03, 1911 in Baltimore, a victim of typhoid fever.(5)  He is also buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery, with his parents.  The cemetery records indicated that he was 35 years old, but family members recall him being only 25 and the 1900 Census seems to confirm this, by stating he was “age 13, born Dec. 1886.”(2b)

ADOLPH HEISE, born September 13, 1877 in Baltimore.  Little Adolph died a week later, on September 22, 1877.(9)  He was buried in Baltimore Cemetery on September 23, 1877.(14) We are puzzled by the fact that he apparently shares a plot with BARBARA A. WICARE who died on November 15, 1861.  Is this a relative of Mary's?  The spelling of the names WEICKER and WICARE are different, but they could possibly be the same family.

LOUIS CARL ARTHUR HEISE was born on February 19, 1879 in Baltimore.  Witnessing Arthur's baptism was his grandfather, Adolph’s father, Ludwig Carl Heise “Louis” is the Anglicized version of “Ludwig.”

Arthur, as he was known, was my great-grandfather.  He married CAROLINE (CARRIE) A. KISSNER circa 1899.  Carrie was born in August 1879 in Maryland.(2b)  Her parents were Fred and Mary Kissner.  Arthur is shown on the census as being 21 years old, living with his wife and small daughter, his parents and his sister Mary Allice and her family.(2b)

Carrie died young, on April 22, 1908 in Baltimore.(5)  She was about 29 years old.  She is buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery.  We know that Arthur remarried at least once after her death, to a widow named SUSANNA TAG.(5)  Susanna had two daughters, VERA and MARION.(11)

Arthur died on June 17, 1955 in Philadelphia(5) where he had lived since the 1920's.(11)  His widow, Susanna, returned him to Baltimore for burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery with his parents and his first wife.

Caroline and Arthur had three children:

LOUIS CHARLES HEISE was born September 13, 1902 in Baltimore.  He married RUTH PAULINE HOLZAPFEL on November 25, 1925.  They had three children.  Louis died on May 5, 1997 in Cape May, New Jersey.  See Louis's page and Ruth's family page for more information about my grandparents.

GERTRUDE M. HEISE was born March 29, 1900 in Baltimore.  She is listed on the 1900 census as “Reha Heise, age 2/12.”  Gertrude married PHILLIP A. AUFFARTH who was born about 1898.(5)  Phillip died on April 20, 1961 in Baltimore and Gertrude died on August 8, 1987 in Baltimore.(5)  They are both buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery.  Gertrude and Phillip had no children.

MARIE HEISE, birthdate is as yet unknown (I haven't found a lot of information on Aunt Marie yet, but I'm working on it!)  Marie married HERMAN KING and they had two sons.  Marie was married a second time to ROLAND TANKERSLEY.

ANNA BARBARA (ANNIE) HEISE, born April 08, 1881 in Baltimore.  We have found few records for Annie.  Family members recall she died at the age of about 16 months and as of July, 2001 we were still looking for records about her.  In August, Marge Watkins discovered that Annie was buried on September 15, 1882 in Baltimore Cemetery.(15)  This falls within the age range that family members recall.  She, too shares a plot with somebody from the WICARE family - CHARLES K. WICARE.  The cemetery notes indicate that Charles was also a small child when he died in December 1850.  We're very curious about the WICARE connection.

AUGUSTA MAUDE HEISE, born September 12, 1892 in Baltimore.(13) She is listed as “Gusta M. Heise, son, age 8, born Sept 1891” on the 1900 census.  This left us wondering whether Augusta had a brother who was a year older, but we finally determined that it must be an error on the census taker's part.  Augusta married WILLIAM LEON GIBSON who was born between 1891 and 1892.(5)  Augusta died on November 27, 1954 in Baltimore(13).  William died on March 18, 1958.(5)  They are both buried at Oak Lawn Cemetery.  Augusta and William had one child and they have living grandchildren and great grandchildren.

ELSIE HEISE.  We know very little about little Elsie.  Family members recall that she died as an infant.  We’re looking for any records about her.
