McWilliam, George Roy, born in Sydney, N.S. in 1905, and shortly after his birth, the family returned to his mother's hometown of Newcastle where he was educated at Harkins Academy, then St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S.

He was in his father's business (The North Shore Leader) for 19 years, first as editor, and upon the death of his father as publisher and president of the incorporated company.

He became a Liberal Member of Parliament for Northumberland-Miramichi in 1949. While in the House of Commons, he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Postmaster-General and the Minister of Public Works, and served a term as Canadian Government observer at the United Nations, New York. He also visited several countries of Europe, including Russia and Czechoslovakia as a member of Parliamentary delegations. He served the riding for 19 years, not re-offering for nomination in 1968. From 1969 to 1972 he served on the National Parole Board.

In Newcastle, he held presidential and other offices in various organizations such as the Newcastle Rotary Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10, Grand Knight of the Miramichi Council K. of C., the Newcastle Credit Union, Miramichi Officers Mess, and in town, county and provincial Liberal Associations.

He joined the North Shore Regiment as a young man, reaching the rank of Major. In World War II, he served with the Canadian Army as adjutant.

He married Kathleen Richard and they had three children. He died May 15, 1977.


Hayes, Helen (McWilliam)- (Mrs. C.E. Hayes) was actively associated with the family business for 36 years, as bookkeeper and reporter, then news editor, and at various times as editor, business manager and secretary-treasurer of the company. Mrs. Hayes was with the Canadian Weekly Newspapers' Association groups on its two six-weeks' post-convention trips to Europe in 1956 and 1963, as well as an earlier trip to Cuba in 1952.


MacAllister, Edith (McWilliam) A well known local historian, librarian and lifelong resident of the Miramichi.
