Cripps Family
"John Cripps married Eliza Borden around 1841. The Borden and the Cripps family came from Queen's County (today Co. Laois or Leix), Kilcolmanbane Parish? (Mountmellick Civil Registration District or Poor Law Union?), in the heart of rural Ireland . The following was an often repeated saying in the Borden family: "Queens County , poor but proud".
"John Cripps and Eliza Borden (alias Bessie Boodan) were married in Ireland , around 1841. Probably because of overcrowded conditions and impending famine, they made the difficult decision to emigrate. John left his bride behind to prepare a life in New Brunswick, Canada, where some of his kin had already established themselves (thus, the "unexplained" Cripps lines are very probably relatives, but without better records in Ireland it is difficult to find the common link); his boat docked at the port of Chatham sometime in July, 1842.
"John Cripps' dream was to acquire land and to become master of his own farm. Soon after his arrival he found employment in a Napan tannery (several miles from Chatham ) where he worked for fifty cents a day! By shrewd management of this meagre salary he bought two farms in Napan. The first farm he bought is where he spent the remainder of his life; he bequeathed it to his eldest son, Daniel. Later in his life he purchased the adjacent property (the Coulson farm) which he gave to his son David.
"Eliza Cripps left Ireland with Maria, accompanied by her two brothers Timothy and Edward Borden. They reached port at Chatham in October, 1845. (Apparently, Maria was such a beautiful baby that Eliza had to turn down several times the captain of the boat that wanted to "buy" her).
"John Cripps worked hard to develop his one hundred acres in Napan where he built a comfortable home, a very large barn and several other buildings. In 1861 the farm was evaluated at one hundred and fifty pounds. John had readied eighteen acres for agriculture, the remainder being woodland; he owned two horses, three milk cows, three other neat cattle, three sheep, one swine and had one hundred and eighty of slaughtered pork. He had the Irish gift of story-telling often instilling fear in young men who used to gather by the evening to listen to his ghost stories. He died on August 6th, 1894, aged 87 years. His wife predeceased him (January 30th, 1894) in her eighty-first year. Both were fortified with the last rites of the church.
