My name is James W. McWilliams; I live in Fredericksburg, Texas. For Many
years now I have been searching for my fifth-great grandfather, Andrew M. McWilliam's
birthplace, his parent's names, their birthplaces. His wife Elizabeth's maiden name, her
birthplace, marriage place and or any other information about him or her I can find. The
earliest information I have on him is where he was paid for service after the
Revolutionary War for the reduction of Charleston, South Carolina on June 23, 1785. At
that time he was living in 96th Dist Pendelton County, South Carolina. He left South
Carolina in about 1792/3, from there he went to Warren County, Kentucky. In 1816 he sold
out in Kentucky and moved to what is now Jefferson County, Alabama where he died in 1823.
Where ever Andrew went there was always a James and a William W. McWilliams found with
him. I am supposing these were his brothers.
In 1833 his brother James applied for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War
to the court in Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi. James stated in his pension
application that he was about 86 or 87 years old and was born in York County, Pennsylvania
in the year of 1746 or 1747 he wasn't for sure but that it was recorded in his fathers
bible.
Now in many countries parents have named their children after their own parent,
grandparents, or earlier ancestors. The death of an infant often caused a name to be used
again. Although there were some variations, the Scots traditionally had a system to name
children as follows:
The first son was named after his father's father
The second son was named after his mother's father
The third son was named after his Father
The first daughter was named for her mother's mother
The second daughter was named after her father's mother
The third daughter was named after her mother
Now if this naming tradition is true then Andrew M. McWilliams, his oldest son is named
John, that means Andrew's father is named John. His second son is named James Wilson. This
means that Andrew's wife, Elizabeth, father's name was Wilson! Andrews's third son was
named Watson A. McWilliams. This A. stands for Andrew then according to the naming
traditions!
As you can see I need some help. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or information that
would help, please contact me.
