Christena Nyhan

CHRISTENA FRANCES NYHAN was born in the Nyhan farmhouse at Knockbrack, on December 25, 1906. Ellis Island Records show that "Christina Nihan" and "Elizabeth Nihan" came to Ellis Island on Sept 7, 1924 from Queenstown, Cork on the ship America. Their residence was listed as Burnfort, Ireland, IFS (Irish Free State"). To(mother?) Mrs D. O'Callahan (Ellen Adams) 1498 3rd Ave NYC. It was in New York that she met her future husband CHRISTOPHER FLYNN. She knew him in Ireland but I guess they got better acquainted here. She married CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL FLYNN November 11, 1934 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Mary and Joseph Maloney at St.Pius Church, Bronx, NY. Christopher was the son of EDWARD FLYNN and ELLEN LINEHAN. He was born January 03, 1903 in Knochbrach, Dist of Rahan, Mallow, Cork, Ireland.Christopher and Christena lived in various places in the South Bronx and were even superintendents in at least one of the buildings. A super's job was not an easy one in those days. Coal furnaces had to be maintained on top of the other duties of cleaning the halls, shining the brass and collecting and putting out the garbage, etc. In one building, the landlord was such a cheapskate that he made them pick the unburnt coal out of the ashes and reuse it!!!The day came when a change was needed so they moved to a newly created neighborhood called Stratton Park. It consisted of a mix of one family houses and recently constructed apartment buildings and some stores. They moved to 1436 Beach Avenue and lived there for 34 years. The family moved to Long Island in 1977 and there she and Christopher lived together with two of their daughters and their six grandchildren. Also living nearby was her two sisters, Caddy and Molly who had also moved to Valley Stream. So this tight knit family was together again - same group different locale. Chrissy liked the change, she and Caddie joined the Valley Stream Senior Citizens Club. For a time, Chrissy also had all her grandchildren under one roof , where she could keep an 'eye' on them. Life was happy for a time until Christopher, her husband of 48 years died on November 26, 1982. She remained in Valley Stream for a time and later moved to Oceanside with her daughter Catherine. Christena died March 7, 1987.
