MANN /MAN

Two of this name are connected with our genealogy although they do not seem to be connected. They spelled it both ways, "Mann" and "Man".

At Rehoboth, Mass. the wife of James Man was presented at court for continuing a meeting from house to house on the Lord’s Day October 2, 1660. According to Plymouth court records, James Man, her husband, was enrolled as a Freeman at Newport May 17, 1750.

Thomas Mann (he spelled it with two "n"s) married first Rachel Bliss who died in 1676 and in 1678 he married Mary Wheaton. Thomas was one of Michael Pieces guides in the famous Indian fight which took place in that town (Reboth) The following account is given by a minister, the Revd. John Cotton:

On March 26, 1676 Sunday occurred the memorable conflict known as the "Pierce Fight" where 52 Englishmen and 11 friendly Indians were killed and the opposing force of Indians lost 140 killed. An idea of the desperate fight may be had when it is remembered that 63 Englishmen and 20 friendly Indians fought in a ring back to back for two hours against great odds and only 11 white people survived.

The Revd. Cotton also said that Thomas Mann had just returned with a sore wound.

Their son John by Mary Wheaton married Abigail Arnold, daughter of Eleazur Arnold and had:

Abigail born 1720
Sarah born 1723
Mary born 1726
Dorcas born 1731
John        born 1734

William Mann was one of the earlier proprietors and settlers of Providence, Rhode Island and married Frances, who was the daughter of William Hopkins and Joanna Arnold.

William and Frances’ daughter Mary married John Lapham the first.
