Jackson

William Jackson, with his family came to the United States about the year 1840 from Ireland at the time of the great famine in that country due to the failure of the potato crop which had existed for about two or three years. Many thousands of the inhabitants of that country came here at that time.

There is a tradition in the family that William Jackson was born at the Fortress of Gibraltar, the son of an English army officer, but have been unable to verify this fact. Certified records obtained from Gibraltar do not show the birth of any child of the name of William between 1795 and 1805, the tradition also states that William's father was transferred to Ireland about 1805 and was located in the vicinity of Cork. But war office records have been unable to find any transfer of a Regiment from Gibraltar to Ireland at that period in which there was an officer named Jackson. However William grew up in Ireland and in 1825 we find him at Rockmills engaged in the Milling business , Rockmills is about 10 miles from Mallow. About 1915 Walter M. Jackson Sr. visited Rockmills and found the old Mill still standing but slowly crumbling to pieces, some of the out buildings were still standing and part of the cottage where he lived (probably the Rose cottage) . The old Church where his children were baptized has disappeared. It was located almost opposite the mill.

Mary Ann Jones Jackson

On January 26, 1825 he married Mary Ann Jones of Rockforest near Mallow in the Parish Church of Rahan. The church still stands, and undoubtedly is in the same condition as it was why the marriage took place.

All of his children were born at Rockmills except his sons Robert and Thomas Walter (my father who were born at Cove, afterward named Queenstown and his daughter Lillie who was born after he came to this country in Watts Street.

For sometime after his arrival here he was engaged in the baking business and afterwards in the ice business, being Secretary for the Knickerbocker Ice Co, from which he resigned and entered into business on his own account having his office and yard at 235 West 18th Street between 8th. & 9th. Avenue, adjoining his home. It was known as the Independent Ice Co. When he sold the property to the City of New York for a school site he built a stable and yards on leased property in West 21 Street west of 10th. Avenue. In 1869 he moved to Yonkers where he had built a home on Riverdale Avenue at Morris Lane. There was a pond in the rear and a small ice house to supply the family also a private stable,

While living in New York he was deeply interested in the Central Methodist Church (now known as Metropolitan- Duane United Methodist Church, 201 W.13th Street) on 7th. Avenue and 14th Street (June 1933, celebrating its 100th. Anniversary). He was one of the Trustees, When he resigned they gave him a gold headed cane which the writer now has. In Yonkers he was instrumental in building the Central M.E. Church on Hudson Street, South Yonkers.

On February 22, 1875, he died after an illness of some time which prevented his attending to the business.  He was burried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, in Brooklyn with his wife who died in 1866.
