BROSNAN / O'BROSNAN
"Essentially a Kerry surname. The 1901 census shows that there were 264 Brosnan families in Kerry at that time. The 66 births registered for the name in the most recent year for which detailed statistics are available were in Munster and 55 of them in Co. Kerry. In Irish it is Ó Brosnacháin, possibly derived from the Kerry place-name Brosna; . Earlier anglicized forms, Brosnaghan etc., preserved the three syllables of the original. There are many variant spellings of the name on record in modern birth registrations including Bresnahan, Bresnane, Bresnehan, Bresnihan, Brosnahen, Brosnahin, Brosnihan, Brusnahan, Brusnehan and Brusnihan; Bresteneharke occurs in the 1611 Inquisitions. The earliest reference to the name I have met is for the year 1333, not however in Kerry but in east Munster, when the betaghs on a manor estate near Clonmel included O'Brosnanes."
