Thomas Wallis 1792

According to the IGI Thomas Wallis my (4 x Great Grandfather) was baptised in Darlington in 1792 to Jonathan Wallis and Jane Bromless.


Married Elizabeth Grieves on December 1 1813. The entry in St Cuthbert's Parish register reads:- Thomas Wallis of this parish, bachelor, and Elizabeth Grieves, of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by licence, with consent of guardians, this first day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirteen, by me James ?, curate. In the presence of ? Wilkinson, William Longstaff, Sarah Preston, her x mark.


In 1839 was employed as a butcher.
In 1841 was living in Bondgate, Darlington. The census entry shows:-

Elizabeth Wallis 45
Elizabeth Wallis 15 woolen?
Grace Wallis 15 woolen?
Sarah Wallis 10
Robert Wallis 8
John Wallis 6
James Wallis 4
William Wallis 1 month


In 1851 was living in the parish of Holy Trinity Darlington. The census entry shows:-
69 Bondgate, Darlington
Thomas Wallace head 59 butcher
Elizabeth Wallace wife 56 houseduties
Sarah Wallace daughter 20 loomweaver
Jane Ann Wallace daughter 16 loomweaver
James Wallace son 13 whitesmith
In 1861 was living at 7 John Street, Darlington. The census shows :-
7 John Street
Thomas Wallis aged 70 butcher born Darlington
Elizabeth aged 66 wife

Was widowed in 1868.

Died on the 19th of January 1876, at 19 John Street Darlington , as the result of old age. His daughter, Jane Ann of the same address was present at his death.

According to the IGI Ruth died on the 11 August 1886 at Hawthorne, Bourke, Victoria, Australia and was buried at Boroondara, Victoria, Australia the next day. Click HERE for more information on Ruth's descendents.
bulletJonathan Wallis- Jonathan Wallace was baptised at St Cuthberts Church Darlington - the son of Thomas a butcher and Elizabeth on March the 9th 1823. The Parish Register for St Cuthbert's shows the burial of a Jonathan Wallace, aged 6 months, on the 21st of September 1823.

In 1841 was living with her family at Bondgate, Darlington.
In 1851 was living at 69 Bondgate with her parents, sister Jane and brother James. She was employed as a loomweaver. Married Richard Carlton at Holy Trinity Church on 11th February 1854. Had been living at Archer Street, Darlington- father Thomas a butcher. Witnesses Joseph Kearton (brother in law) and Elizabeth Carlton.

bulletWilliam Wallis- The LDS site shows the birth of William Wallis- son of Thomas Wallis and Elizabeth Grieves - in Darlington on the 26th of April 1841.
The parish records for St Cuthbert's , Darlington show the baptism, on the 30th of May 1841, of William Wallis son of Thomas - a butcher - and Elizabeth. According to the 1841 census he was 1 month old and living with his family at Bondgate, Darlington.
Died on the 25th of January 1842.
