Robert Scott Ormerod Robert Scott Ormerod was born on the 8th of December 1874, at Archer Street, Darlington, the son of Moss Ormerod and Grace Byers. Robert was a short, stocky man with a walrus type moustache. He was employed as a painter when he married Sarah Elizabeth Hopper at The Parish Church, Dalton Le Dale, Easington, Durham on the 23rd of November 1898. His brother, John Thomas, was a witness to the event. By 1901Robert and Sarah were living at 33 Larchfield Street, Darlington and Robert was employed as a house painter/ journeyman. A journeyman was someone who had served an apprenticeship and was no longer bound to serve a master. Distinguished on one side from apprentice, on the other from master. Wards trade directory for 1908/09 shows Robert Scott as a painter and living at 33 Larchfield Street, Darlington. 1911 census-

Robert Scott Ormerod was widowed in 1928 at the age of 54. Twelve years later, in 1940, Robert was living at 28 Bates Avenue, Darlington when he married Rose M French, a widow, 3 years his elder, of 12 Borough Road, Darlington. His family were vehemently against his re-marriage. His son, Kelsell, only agreed to be a witness to the event out of love for his father, not because he agreed with the union. Robert died on the 6th of December 1946, aged 71 years, at 12 Borough Road, Darlington as the result of `angina pectoris'. His stepson, S H Thompson of The Turks Head Hotel, Bondgate, Darlington was present at the death. ( George Henry Thompson was licensee at The Turks Head, 26 Bondgate, Darlington from 1933 until 1953). Robert was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 9th of December 1946, in the same grave as his first wife, Sarah- S 7B 87. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend G L Lawrence.
