Robert Grieve Wallis

Robert was christened at St Cuthbert's Darlington on the 21st of April 1833, son of Thomas Wallis and Elizabeth Grieves.

In 1841 he was living with his family at Bondgate, Darlington.

In 1851 Robert Wallis, aged 18, was employed as a cabinet maker and a visitor at 29 Bondgate, Darlington when the census was taken. 

He married Elizabeth Wade at Holy Trinity Church, Darlington on the 3rd June 1854. He was employed as a cabinet maker and living at Archer Street at the time. He was of full age and Elizabeth was a minor. Witnesses to the marriage were his brother in law Joseph Kearton and a Margret Barron.

According to the 1861 census he was living with his wife and 3 children at 5 Archer Street, Darlington and employed as a cabinet maker. The census shows :-

In September of 1886 he was elected member of the Town Council, and continued to hold that position until 1891, when he was defeated by Mr Thomas French. In 1892 he was re-elected, and on the 25th November 1893, he was appointed chairman of the Market and Fairs Committee, which position he occupied until his death.

Robert was a councillor for the North West Ward of Darlington in 1896 along with T Stairmand and Robert Imeson.

Robert Wallis' last committee meeting appears to have been -

Parliamentary Powers Committee 24 July 1896

Present = Councillor Wallis (in the chair), Aldermen Barron, Sedgewick and Wilkes, Councillors Manson and Marshall.

Chairman resolved that Councillor Wallis takes the chair.

Accounts - Various accounts amounting to £1044  16s  11d are examined and passed.

 

Robert died at Greenbank Road, Darlington on the 6th of October 1896 aged 63 years. The cause of death was apoplexy, certified by Thos Wall, MD. Robert was listed as a builder + merchant. His son James, of Greenbank Road, was with him when he died and registered the death on the 7th of October 1896. Robert was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 10th of October 1896.

Baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Darlington on the 21st of September 1859 - daughter of Robert, a joiner and Bessy. Mary Ann married John Elliott at Darlington Registry Office on the 13th of October 1879. bulletWilliam Martin Wallis-  Baptised at Holy Trinity Church Darlington on the 18th of October 1861- son of Robert, cabinet maker and Bessy. Died at Winstone Street, Darlington aged 24 years and buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 6th of June 1885, grave reference ECC 154.
bulletHenry G Wallis born c1863. Was a plumber in the 1881 census. Initial search in the 1901 census shows Henry Wallis, 38 born Darlington a plumbers manager in Gt Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
bulletSarah Wallis born c 1865. A Sarah Wallis was married in Darlington in the March quarter of 1888. Cross referencing it on FreeBMD shows a Henry Hodgson. Free BMD shows the birth, in Darlington, in the December quarter of 1899, of Robert Greaves Hodgson. Initial searches on the 1901 census shows Sarah, Henry  and Robert Hodgson still in Darlington.

In 1891 was living with her parents at 2 Greenbank Road, Darlington.   On the 9th March 1898, Ruth Wallis, 25 of Greenbank Rd (father Robert ) married Walter Robson, 25, a police constable of Witton Park ( father John Robson deceased blacksmith), at Holy Trinity Church Darlington
