01 December 2003 Richard Wilson Wallis Baptised at St John's
Church, Darlington on the 10th of February 1856, son of Thomas
Wallis - a tailor - and Ann, of Freeman's Place. According to the 1881
census was living at 25 Freeman's Place, Darlington, unmarried and employed as a
hairdresser and fancy dealer. In 1885 was employed as
a hairdresser and living at 20 Parkgate, Darlington. Married Elizabeth Graham at St Cuthbert's Church, Darlington on the 7th of October 1883. They had at least 2 children-
Richard was widowed when
Elizabeth died in April 1888. Burials show - 22 April 1888 at West
Cemetery, Darlington - Elizabeth Wallis aged 32 of Parkgate He married Mary Ann Smith at St Hilda's Church, Darlington on the 11th of August 1889. Richard was 33, a widower, hairdresser of 20 Parkgate. Mary Ann was 31, a spinster of 25 Freeman's Place. Witnesses were James Twistle and George Henry Chapman. Richard and Mary Ann had at least 2 children-
Wards trade directory for 1898/99 shows R W Wallis - hairdresser at 20 Parkgate, Darlington. 1891 census shows- 1901 census shows - Richard died at 10 Greenbank Road, Darlington in 1934, aged 78 years. Buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 3rd of December 1934, plot R7 O7. The grave was described as purchased ( 6 + 7) and deep. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend L A Howe. The local paper, dated the 3rd of December 1934 shows - WALLIS - ( Suddenly) on the 29th November, at 10 Greenbank-road, Darlington, Richard Wilson, the dearly loved husband of Mary Wallis, aged 78 years. Internment West Cemetery to-day (Monday), cortege leaving residence at 1.30p.m. for service in St Hilda's Church. Funeral at Darlington of Mr R W Wallis Former Well-Known Local Tradesman The funeral took place at Darlington yesterday of a former well-known tradesman Mr Richard Wilson Wallis, whose death took place suddenly on Thursday last at his home, 10 Greenbank-road, Darlington. Mr Wallis, who was 78, was a native of the town and worked as a youth for the late Mr Dresser, hairdresser of Bondgate. He later established his own business as hairdresser and fancy dealer in Parkgate, and carried this on for about 45 years, retiring some five years ago. A keen churchman, he had twice served as warden at St Hilda's Church, where a service was held before before the internment in the West Cemetery. The Reverend L A Howe (vicar of St Hilda's) officiated. The chief mourners were - Mrs M Wallis (widow); Miss Florence Wallis, Miss Dora Wallis and Mrs H McMaster (daughters); Mr H McMaster, Barrow In Furness (son in law); Mr Thomas Wallis (brother); Mrs Mais (sister); the Reverend J Doncaster, Murton, Mr C Smith and Mr J Smith, Shildon (brothers in law); Mrs Thompson and Mrs Wilkinson (sisters in law); Mr T W Mais, Mr S Wallis, Newby Wiske; Mrs Wood and Mr and Mrs R W Chapman (nephews and nieces); Mrs C Smith, Mrs J Doncaster, Mrs Mcmaster (West Hartlepool), and Mr and Mrs A Hinde.
