Robert Glendenning

Robert was the 7th of 10 children born to George Glendenning and Ann Chamberlain.  

He was baptised at St Cuthbert's Darlington on 6th January 1828.

In 1841he was living with his family at Clay Row, Darlington.
In 1845 he was a witness to the wedding of his sister, Jane. He signed his name with the sign of a cross.
In 1849 was witness to the marriage of sister Elizabeth to Thomas Crawford.
In 1851, at the age of 23 he was living at home with his widowed mother and 4 of his brothers and sisters at Clay Row, Darlington and employed as a butcher.
On the 31st of July 1856 he married Elizabeth Ann Stobart, who was 9 years his junior, at the Parish Church, Darlington. Robert was employed as a butcher and was living in Clay Row , Darlington when son, George Henry was born on March 16th 1858. Robert was widowed in May 1859. By November 1859 he was living at Parkgate, Darlington when his son George Henry died.

On the 22nd of February 1860 he married Elizabeth Blackburn, who was 13 years his junior, at The Chapel, Forcett, Yorkshire.

                                 

 

In 1861 was living with wife Elizabeth and 3 month old daughter, Susie, at 19 Parkgate, Darlington and employed as a butcher when the census was taken. 

 

Mercer + Crocker Directory for Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle for 1868 shows Robert Glendenning as a beer retailer at Parkgate, Darlington.
In 1869 Robert was employed as a Beerhouse keeper at Parkgate, Darlington.
In the 1871 census Robert is shown as a Beerhouse Keeper and living with his family at 55 ParkGate, Darlington. In December 1871 he is a publican of Croft Villa's. The Post Office Directory of Durham and Northumberland for 1873 shows Robert Glendenning at The Forge Inn, Spring Street, Darlington. By February 1874 he is once more a butcher, this time living at Skerne Place. In July 1878 George was still a butcher but now living at 1 Silver Street.
By 1881 he was again employed as a butcher and living at 52 Park Place, Darlington.

Robert died on the 29th of September 1890 at the Union Workhouse, Darlington aged 63 years. His death certificate states the cause of death as " Epilepsy, paralysis, some years exhaustion" Certified by George Middlemiss M.D. The informant of death was the workhouse master- J Graham. Robert's occupation was listed as Master Butcher of Model Place, Darlington.

He was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 2nd of October 1890 in the same grave as his mother, Ann - C LLL 169 . The Reverend E Kirby performed the ceremony and the Registrar was Joseph Bowker. Graves 169 + 170 had been                    

Elizabeth died 22 years later.

Was not in Darlington when the 1891 census was taken.

In 1891, according to the census, he was employed as a boot maker and living with his mother and family at 63 Model Place, Darlington.
