Moss Ormerod

 

Moss was born on the 22nd of July 1843 in the village of West Bradford, Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Ormerod and Jane Moss. He was christened in nearby Waddington on the 13th of August 1843.

His father died when Moss was 10 years old and his mother when he was 13.

The 1871 census shows Moss, 26 years old, unmarried, plasterer, born West Bradford, lodging at Lower Heysham in Lancashire.

Moss was employed as a plasterer and living at Stanhope, County Durham when he married Grace Byers on the 10th of October 1871 at Gateshead Registry Office. They moved to Darlington, where Moss' brother Joseph was living, sometime between 1871 and 1873. In 1881 they were living at 20 Eskdale Street, Darlington, a house which was later to belong to Moss' Granddaughter, Emily until the mid 1980's.

Moss and Grace had 6 children:-

bulletJohn Thomas Whitfield Ormerod- born in Darlington in 1873. Electoral registers for 1900 -1906  show John Ormerod renting a bedroom and the use of a sitting room, 1st and ground floors, furnished, at 20 Eskdale Street, Darlington from his father Moss Ormerod also of 20 Eskdale Street. Died at 20 Eskdale Street, aged 51 years. Buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 27th of January 1925, grave S 6N 17. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend H E Barrell.

1925 Autumn Register -20 Eskdale Street - Ruth Grace Ormerod, Ada and Ernest Thompson and Edmund Craggs. Lived at 20 Eskdale Street until 1929. Married Carr Wressell in Darlington in the September quarter of 1928.

Moss was widowed in May 1922.

Moss died on the 29th February 1924 at 20 Eskdale Street, Darlington, aged 80 years. The cause of death was ` enlarged prostate cystitis (chronic) and secondary pneumonia'. His son, David of 2 Freeman's Terrace, was with him when he died. Buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 3rd of March 1924 in the same grave as his wife Grace- 
S 6S 73. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend W Howarth.
