                         William McNeilly

William (my Great, Great Grandfather) was born in Ireland around 1835, the son of James and Mary, nee O'Holland.

It is unsure when William came to the UK. William Married Mary Ann McGill in August 1859 in Springburn, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Their first child, my Great Grandfather, James, was born in Springburn on June 24th 1860.

The 1861 census for Springburn shows-

Address: 567 Springburn Rd Registration Number: 622/2
Registration district: Springburn
Civil parish: Springburn
County: Lanarkshire
James McKneely 9 Mo
Mary Ann McKneely 24
William McKneely 36 (should be 26)

By 1865 they were living at 205 Blackhill, Benfieldside, County Durham, England where William was employed as a labourer at the local ironworks. Further moves, presumably following work, took them to Saddle Lane, Willow Holme, Carlisle, Cumbria briefly in 1869, before moving later that year to Westfield Street, Darlington, County Durham where William was once again employed as a labourer at the local ironworks.

William and Mary had four children:-

William died on the 21st of August 1870, at The Cottage Hospital, Darlington, aged 35, as the result of gangrene. He was buried at St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Darlington on the 23rd of August 1870, although the entry, in Latin, had him down as MacNally.

Mary Ann went on to have a further three children, the first of these being born only a year after William's death. William's name was given on all documentation relating to these three children, so I suppose the identity of their father(s) will never be known. The Electoral Register for 1884 shows Mary Ann living at 41 Gray Street.  Ward's Trade Directory for 1898/99 shows Mary Ann still living at 41 Grey Street, Darlington.
