Matthew Hoggett c1816

Born at Cragg, Lartington on the 25th of February 1816 and baptised the next day, son of John Hogget and Margaret Sayer

In 1845 Matthew was left 24 acres at Fountain Head, Bowes, along with his brother John in their father's will. 

The 1851 cenus shows Matthew, 35, unmarried, farmers son, living at Cragg, Lartington.

 He married Margaret Wappett on the 19th of June 1852 at Lartington. Witnesses were John Wappett and Elizabeth Donald. 

The 1871 census for Bowes shows Matthew, aged 55, farmer of 40 acres, his wife Margaret, aged 51 and 4 children. 

Return of Landowners 1871 and 1873 shows a Matthew Hoggitt of Bowes owning land of 91 acres, 0 roods and 28 perches and with a gross estimated rental of £80. 

In 1881 Matthew, aged 65, owner and farmer of 44 acres, was living with his wife and 2 of his children at Fountain Head, Bowes, Yorkshire. Bulmer's 1890 Trade Directory shows Matthew Hoggett, a farmer at Fountain Head. 

The 1891 census shows Matthew, aged 74, farmer living at 22 Fountain Head, Bowes along with his wife, son John, daughter Mary and  grand daughter Elizabeth Allen aged 8. Kelly's 1897 Trade Directory shows Matthew Hoggett as a farmer at Fountain Head.

 Matthew died in the March quarter of 1903.

Matthew and Mary had at least 3 children -

Mary Ann born 18th February 1856 at Fountain Head and baptised at Lartington on the 29th of February 1856 -

Margaret Christina, born 5 July 1858 at Fountain Head and baptised at Lartington on the 1st of August 1858 -

John, born on the 6th of April 1862 at Fountain Head and baptised at Lartington on the 2nd of May 1862, sponsors Edmund Hoggett and Ann Hoggett. John died on the 5th of May 1892, aged 30 years and was buried at St Giles Church, Bowes. The Monumental Inscription read:- " In loving memory of John Hoggett the beloved son of Matthew and Margaret Hoggett of Fountain Head Bowes who was killed on Bowes Road May 5th 1892 aged 30 years" (verse).
