Elizabeth Ann Hoggett (lily)

Born on the 24th of May 1886 and baptised on the 30th by William Kirkham, sponsors Matthew Hoggett and Isabella Scarre, the daughter of Edmund Thomas Hoggett and Isabella Dove. Named Elizabeth Ann but went by the name Lily.

 1901 census for 1 South View, Barnard Castle shows a Lily Hoggett aged 14, born Lartington working as a domestic servant for Henry Mudie?, solicitor, wife and 2 young children.

Details surrounding the birth of Ena are a bit vague. One story has it that Ena was Lily's illegitimate daughter, father unknown, but was brought up by Ma Hoggett ( in effect, her Grandmother).


Lily married Jack (John William )Stapleton  at St Augustines R C Chapel, Darlington on the 7th of January  1911. Lily was 24 years old and living at Grange Road, Darlington. John was a 24 year old joiner and wheelwright (journeyman) living at the Waterworks, Darlington. Witnesses were Joseph Hoggett and Monica Hoggett.


Lily and Jack had 2 daughters , Millie and Mattie.  

Lily died in hospital on the 27th of February 1929. She was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 2nd of March 1929, grave P 7E 143. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend W Malone. The inscription on the headstone reads:-
In loving memory of Elizabeth Ann the beloved wife of John Wm Stapleton died 27 February 1929 aged 42 years also the above John Wm Stapleton died 28 September 1940 aged 63 years.RIP.
