Jonathan Wallis 1798

Born in Darlington on the 6th of December 1798 and baptised at St Cuthbert's on the 19th of January 1799, son of Jonathan Wallis and Jane Brownless

The Parish Registers for St Cuthbert's, Darlington show Jonathan marrying Ann Stairmand on the 13th of March 1828. Witnesses to the marriage were a Thomas Stairmand and Ellen Dickinson.

According to the 1861 census Jonathan and family were living at 104 Bondgate, Darlington. Thomas was listed as a Grocer and Provisions Dealer. the census shows:-

Jonathan Wallis aged 62 grocer and provisions dealer born Darlington
Ann wife aged 61 born Gayles, YKS
Mary daughter aged 30 born Darlington
Alice daughter aged 29 dressmaker born Darlington
Jane Ann daughter aged 19 born Darlington
William Stairmand nephew aged 19 printer born Darlington ( other Stairmands living at 1 Union Row)

Jonathan Wallis died on the 6th of December 1867.
He was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 8th of December 1867. He had been living at 103 Bondgate, Darlington and was listed as a dissenter. ref D WW 111
The grave stone read:-
In memory of Jonathan Wallis of Darlington who died December 6th 1867 aged 69 years.
Also of Ann Wallis wife of the above died March 2nd 1869 aged 69 years.
Also Mary daughter of the above died May 14th 1876 aged 45 years.
Also of the three following daughters
Eleanor, Sarah Eleanor and Eleanor who were interred in St Cuthbert's Yard.
Also Alice Wallis born December 1831 died September 22nd 1905.

                                  

 

Jonathan and Ann had at least 6 children:-

Died aged 7 months, buried at St Cuthbert's Church on the 10th of July 1829- mentioned on the headstone of her parents at Darlington's West Cemetery.

bulletEleanor Wallis- St Cuthberts, Darlington shows the baptism of Eleanor Wallace, daughter of Jonathan, a shoemaker and Ann on the 15th of January 1837. Burial entered in St Cuthberts Parish Records as Eleanor Wallas buried on 21 May 1838 aged 1 and a half. Mentioned on the headstone of her parents grave in Darlington's West Cemetery.

bulletSarah Eleanor Wallis- St Cuthbert's, Darlington shows the baptism of Sarah Eleanor Wallis, daughter of Jonathan, a shoemaker and Ann on the 4th of February 1844. Died on the 2nd of February 1845.
Mentioned on the headstone of her parents grave at Darlington's West Cemetery as being interred at St Cuthbert's Church.
