John and Ann Hoggett

Ann Hoggett was born on the 20th August 1801, the daughter of Matthew Hoggett and Mary Dent. She was baptised at Lartington  Hall Private Chapel the following day.

She married John Hoggett  at Romaldkirk on the 5th of May 1831, witnesses were Joseph Robinson and Margaret Thompson. John Hoggett  was born in Piercebridge about 1807. According to Steve Reed ( also a descendent of the Hoggetts) John was baptised on the 10 July 1807 at Manfield Cliffe R C Chapel. In the 1851 census John is shown living with his wife, Ann and 2 sons in Lartington Village.

In 1861 John is shown with his family at Cotherstone.

John was employed as a joiner in 1861 when his son, John , was married.

Ann died at Cotherstone on the 12th of July 1862, aged 60 years. The cause of death was given as `Dropsy' ( Oedema - fluid retention often due to heart failure or kidney disease). Hannah Hoggett was present at the death.

In Barnard Castle Roman Catholic cemetry a grave is shown as saying- ' Pray for the soul of A... ..... of Cotherstone who d... 1862 aged 60 years. Of William Hogge.. their son who d 19? Jan 1860 aged 30 years.'


By 1871 John was living with his son Edmund at Rigg Farm , Lartington. He was, or had been, a cabinet maker.
In 1881 he was living at Rigg House, Lartington, the farm run by his son Edmund. He was widowed and listed as an annuitant aged 73.
He died at Rigg Farm Lartington on the 18th of December 1889, aged 82 years. His death certificate states that he was a retired cabinet maker. The cause of death was 'acute pneumonia - 3 days' and his son Edmund of Rigg Farm was in attendance.
He was buried in the churchyard of Lartington Roman Catholic Cemetry, Lartington, North Yorkshire.
His gravestone reads:

Of your charity pray for the soul of John Hoggett of Rigg Farm Lartington who died 18th December 1889 aged 82 years. RIP.

bulletWilliam Hoggett-  Born on the 17th May 1835 and baptised in Lartington Catholic Chapel on the 19th of May 1835, second son of John Hoggett and Ann, nee Hoggett.
In 1851 was living with his family in Lartington Village.
The 1861 census shows William with his parents and brother John living at Cotherstone, aged 25 and employed as a cabinet maker.
