James McNeilly

James was born in Springburn, Lanarkshire, Scotland on June 24th 1860, the eldest child of William McNeilly and Mary Ann McGill.

His family moved to Darlington when he was about 10 years old .

 1871,1881 and 1891 census' show James living in Gray Street, Darlington..

James was working as a labourer at the iron works and lived at Westfield Street, Albert Hill, Darlington when he married Eleanor Glendenning on the 3rd of October 1891 at St Augustine's R C Chapel, Darlington. Their marriage was witnessed by James' sister Annie and her future husband, Brown Boyd.

Wards trade directory for 1898-99 shows J McNeilly, labourer living at 10 Albert Street, Darlington. As does the Electoral Register for 1899. The 1900 edition shows James at 14 Albert Street, successively with 10 Albert Street.

In 1925 James was employed as a railway messenger.

James and Eleanor had 6 children:-
bulletElizabeth Ann - born on the 15th of January 1892 and baptised at St Augustine's R C Church, Darlington on the 31st of January 1892. Godparents were her Aunt, Annie McNeilly and Annie's future husband, Brown Boyd. 

Elizabeth Ann McNeilly 8 died at 14 Albert Street, Darlington on the 22nd of January 1900, as the result of rheumatic fever, endocarditis. Her father, James, was present at the death. She was buried in West Cemetery, Darlington on 25 January 1900 unconsecrated ground O 4R 16

bulletJohn Albert McNeilly - St Augustine's R C Church, Darlington shows the baptism on the 3rd of July 1898 of John Albert McNeilly, born 11 June 1898, son of James McNeilly. John Albert McNeilly 6 died at Carters Row, Darlington in 1905. Burial service held at St Augustine's RC Chapel on 3 May 1905.

On the 11th of November 1930 James and Eleanor moved into number 19 Sir ED Walker Homes, ( housing for the elderly) in Conniscliffe Road , Darlington.

James died on the 23rd of December 1938 at 19 Sir E D Walker Homes, aged 78, due to valvular disease of the heart. His son, James, was in attendance. His death certificate states that he was a retired railway messenger. He was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 26th of December 1938 - grave reference Q 7Z 128.
The ceremony was performed by the Reverend E Urquhart.
