Harry Harker

Born on the 11th of December 1888, at Hutton Magna, the 4th child of Joseph Harker and Teresa Mary Clement.
Harry's mother died on 24th December (Christmas Eve) just 13 days after giving birth to Harry. Although Harry never knew his mother he was known to hate Christmas and always be particularly grumpy at that time of year.


In 1891 , aged 2, was living at Hutton Village with his Grandparents George and Elizabeth Clement.


Harry served in the First World War.


                                                              

He worked as a gamekeeper at Dalton Hall.

Harry met and married Monica May Hoggett whilst they both worked at Wycliffe Hall, Wycliffe - Harry as a gardener and Monica as a cook.

Harry and Monica were married at St Mary's Church, Wycliffe on the 6th of August 1921.

He worked for a while at Hodgsons Quarry, Lane Head where he lost an eye.
He worked as a pipe layer's labourer for Darlington Corporation Water Department in 1951.
Lived at 83 Victoria Road, Darlington.

Harry died on the 25th of April 1956, aged 67, at 83 Victoria Road, Darlington. He was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 28th of April 1956 - reference F J 39. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend J O' Neill.

 

Harry and Monica had 2 children:-

 

bulletTeresa Harker (my Grandmother)  born 1921 at Wycliffe, Teesdale. She married Harry Ethelbert Barras  on January 13th 1940 at St Augustine's R C Church, Darlington. They had 2 children, my mother Margaret Patricia Barras in 1940 and David Barras in 1941. Teresa and Harry divorced and Teresa married Clarence Raymond Lambert on the 1st of August 1951 at Darlington Registry Office. They had 6 children, Marion, Monica, Angeline, Michael, Raymond and Phillip.
bulletHilda Harker born 23rd September 1922. Married David McSkimming and had 2 children, John and Ann. Died August 2002.
