George Glendenning
George Glendenning ( my
3 x Great Grandfather) was born on the 13th of September 1791, the son of
John Glendenning and Jane Jackson. Parish
Registers for Barton, St Cuthberts, Yks show -
22 September 1791 -
George son of John and Jane Glendenning, baptised. Born 13th.He married Ann
Chamberlain at St Cuthbert's Church, Darlington on the 13th of May 1815.

George was employed as a labourer and both he and his wife Ann were living in
the St Cuthbert's Parish of Darlington.
George was employed as a brick maker in 1816 when his eldest child was baptised.
He later became a butcher.
In 1841 was living with
his family at Clay Row , Darlington. The census shows:-

George Glendenning ran
the Unicorn Hotel at 19 Clay Row, Darlington in 1847, his wife Ann continuing
after his death until about 1854.
He died at his home at
Clay Row, Darlington on the 4th of June 1848, aged 56 years as the result of an
abcess in the lungs. A William Baister was in attendance.
He was buried on the 7th June 1848 at St Cuthbert's , Darlington. The monumental
inscription reads:
Sacred to the memory of GEORGE GLENDENING who departed this life June 4th 1848
aged 56 years. Also HENRY son of the above GEORGE and ANN GLENDENNING who
departed this life August 1st 1834 aged 8 year. Also JOHN their son who departed
this life April 20th 1844 aged 26 years. Also WILLIAM their son who departed
this life September 7th 1854 aged 24 years.
As of the 2nd of June 1999 the grave is still standing , in St Cuthbert's
Churchyard, and is one of the most legible ones there

Baptised at St Cuthbert's Darlington on 17th October 1825.
Died on the 1st August 1834, aged 8 years, according to tombstone in St
Cuthbert's Churchyard but St Cuthbert's Parish register of burials shows him
to have been buried on August 4th 1833, aged 7 years. Presumably the
inscription was added at a later date and not quite correct. Buried in St
Cuthbert's Churchyard on along with father, George and brothers John and
William. |

Baptised at St Cuthberts Darlington on 24th January 1830.
In 1841 was living with his family at Clay Row, Darlington.
In 1851 was living with his widowed mother, brother Robert and 3 sisters at
Clay Row, Darlington. He was 21 and employed as a butcher.
Died on September the 7th 1854, aged 24 years. Buried in St Cuthbert's
Churchyard with father , George and brothers John and Henry. |

Ann Glendenning - Baptised at St Cuthberts Darlington on 23rd October 1831,
ninth child of George Glendenning and Ann Chamberlain.
In 1841 was living with her family at Clay Row, Darlington.
In 1851 was living at Clay Row, Darlington with her widowed mother and some
of her brothers and sisters.
In 1861 she was living with her widowed mother at 21 Parkgate, Darlington.
The 1871 census shows Ann Glendenning living on her own at 52 ParkGate,
Darlington. She is described as an annuitant.
By 1881 she was living with her sister, Mary and her family at Skinnergate,
Darlington. The census lists her as 49 and an annuitant.
In 1891 she was living with her brother in law, James Best and his son
Thomas at 33 Bondgate, Darlington ( her sister Mary was dead).
Ann died at Bondgate in October 1897, aged 66 years. She was buried at
Darlington's West Cemetery on the 19th of October 1897, plot A BBB 150.
