Edmund
Joseph Hoggett
Born on the 19th of
March 1832 and baptised at Lartington RC Chapel the same day, the son of
John Hoggett and Ann nee Hoggett.
Married
Ann Wappitt at Lartington on the 25th of May 1856. Witnesses were William
Hoggett and Elizabeth Wappitt.
According to the 1851 census Edmund was visiting his aunt Elizabeth , a widower,
at Craghill, in Lartington.
In 1861 he was living at West Cragg, Lartington with his wife, son and mother in
law and employed as a shepherd.
On the 5th December 1870
Edmund leased Rigg Farm, Lartington for a term of 21 years from Reverend Thomas
Witham of Lartington Hall from 13th May 1874. Rent £181 per annum. This
consisted of the dwellinghouse
called the Rigg in the Township of Lartington and also all those closes pieces
on parcels of land adjoining to Rigg Farm containing two hundred and sixty acres
. Together with all and singular houses, outhouses, barn, stables, outbuildings,
ways, paths, passages, waters, watercourses, conveniences, advantages and
appentenances.

In 1871 Edmund was
farming 500 acres of land , employing 3 labourers at Rigg Farm, Lartington.

Memorandum
Let Edmund Hoggett of Rigg, Lartington Park, Containing about 70 acres, at One
hundred and fifty pounds, per ann. (Viz. Rent One hundred and forty pounds and
Tithe rent charge Ten Pounds) from the 6th day of April 1873, on the usual
conditions of our Agreements, except the Landlord has to keep in repair all the
fences, and that the Park must always be in pasture and not to be mown - And
that no horses be allowed to graze in it - Mr Hoggett also agrees to keep down
all weeds, (nettles, thistles etc) by mowing them as often as needed.

Let E Hoggett for his son Battle Hill farm for £350 - per ann. - The Landlord
to drain what is necessary of the Allotments - and pay one ? of the cost of the
Lime at the kiln - And a new fence or two - and thoroughly repair all the fences
and complete the new road, and then the tenant to keep it in good repair.

Edmund was buried at Lartington Roman Catholic Cemetry, Lartington. His grave is
marked by a cross and the inscription:
Of your charity pray for the soul of Edmund Hoggett of Rigg Farm Lartington who
died 8th November 1900 aged 68 years. RIP .

Edmund and Ann had
at least 4 children:-
 | Monica Hoggett- Born
on the 15th of November 1869, twin with Ann Elizabeth, and baptised at home
the same day - presumably not expected to live. Ann was later baptised in a
ceremony on the 17th of November 1869. No mention is made of Monica. A
Monica Hoggett aged 0 years died in Teesdale in the March quarter of 1870
according to the St Catherine's Index. |
